The ongoing pandemic has created great uncertainty, anxiety, elevated stress posing challenge to corporate leaders. In such a criss, with lot of misinformation around, a leaders words can help people keep safe, adjust and cope emotionally and help them draw some meaning out of their experiences. Inspite of the fact that a lot of information is available through television, social media, newspapers etc. the employers often underestimate the fact how much their employees depend on them as trusted sources. This has been found in the survey conducted, where 63% said they would believe in information shared by the employer about the virus. Great communicators and leaders can bring great comfort, restore faith and are remembered long after the crisis as well. The five things done by superior crisis communicators can be used as a guide to handle such crisis and turn it into a catalyst for change.

Leader's with their effective communication skills can shape a meaningful story for the organization. It also encourages people to build their own stories invoking common culture and values as touchstones for healing and strength. Through this they underscore a common sense of purpose, how the organisation can rally at a generation defining moment, indicating new paths for the future. Leaders might not know all the answers, but as long as they communicate candidly and openly with employees will determine how the business performs during the crisis and after.

Employees are scared, anxious, and confused about the impact of the crisis and what holds in the future. It is now up to the leaders to effectively communicate with them, make them feel safe and cared for so that they can help the organization get through this pandemic. It’s easier said than done for leaders as there is no particular guideline for them to follow. They are expected to take action and provide information without knowing how it will impact the employees. Amidst this uncertainty, the leaders can at least resort to some basic effective communication tactics which will restore faith, hope, and resilience among employees.

This article demonstrates the impact a leader has on its employers, shareholders, and people. A good leader steps up in the time of need and delivers what people desire. Leaders may be tempted to rely on governments and media channels for clear and concise safety recommendations. His way of action can have a negative reaction from the public, for example, during the mad-cow-disease outbreak in 1990, a government official gave his daughter a hamburger in front of TV cameras and stated that British beef had never been safer, despite conflicting evidence. Instead of boosting morale, this approach merely served to diminish public faith in the government's reaction. Therefore, a leader sees how things can be improved and motivates people to work toward that better vision.

The simultaneous crises of COVID-19 provide leaders with endless obstacles and no straightforward remedies. There are many harsh agreements, and with them, there are difficult choices for various audiences to communicate complicated problems. Managers have never been highlighted by a suspicious public who evaluate how careful, honest, and purposeful enterprises are. The leaders lack a playbook to engage immediately, much less reassure them of the future, with shaken staff and communities on pressing topics of tremendous concern. Leaders may be prone to refer clear and basic safety guidelines to governments and media sources. However, employers typically misjudge the extent to which their workers are reliable sources. A poll shows that 63% of the workers believe their company will provide information about the virus instead of 58% trusting government websites or 51% trust traditional media. Words and deeds of a leader may enable people to be safe during such situations, adapt to them, emotionally cope with them, and lastly, help them put their experience into perspective and derive meaning. But as this crisis leaves from the direction of life and death on public health and safety at work to existential problems such as company continuity, job losses, and profoundly changed working methods, it cannot be seen to have an outcome.

The pandemic was a technical equalizer of several kinds where formerly unusually individuals had no option but to adapt to use technological instruments in their employment. And employees become increasingly efficient in some circumstances. People were more patient in learning and engaged in new technology simply because they had to. For this purpose, expect a more agile approach to communicate and collaborate with colleagues: more meetings become emails, and more emails become instant messaging. Calls and appointments can be transferred into a video for team members who have no longer worked together in a central office. It can help create confidence amongst employees who cannot interact personally. In addition, changes in consumer preference and increasing social distance interest will limit major group gatherings, such as conferences and conventions for the near future.

This transparency has forced leaders to embrace authenticity, be more empathetic and available than they would have been ordinarily, which has been valued by employees. Remote working is likely to endure for the foreseeable future, but even once things get back to normal, businesses and leaders should still maintain regular and authentic communications. As the situation evolves, businesses are going to need to think strategically about how they manage their communications across a variety of scenarios and channels depending on what the recovery looks like.

In moments of crisis such as the Covid-19 pandemic which has created great uncertainty, emotional stress, anxiety, and even limited the plans of the people, fundamental techniques of effective communication such as focusing on long term goals and understanding stakeholders’ needs are ideal and vital to help people adjust and cope emotionally. Leaders and crisis communicators are expected to tailor their communications to the stages of the crisis people are experiencing, and to what people need most in the moment. Every crisis has a life cycle, and emotional states and needs vary with the cycle’s stages. For example, in a crisis’s early stages, communicators must provide instructing information to encourage calm; how to stay safe is fundamental. As the crisis’s end comes into view, communicators should ramp up internalizing information to help people make sense of the crisis and its impact. In this crisis leaders can draw on a wealth of research and experience to build organizational resilience through an extended period of uncertainty, even turn the crisis into a catalyst for positive change.

Whether it is personal life or professional life, the importance of communication cannot be obscured in any way possible. We will always need effective communication skill to get a message through. In most of the situation, communication should in a both way approach, thereby, ability of active listening is as important as the ability to vocally transmit information. Furthermore, communication with people who have different viewpoint and skill is also very crucial specially in a work setting. In the workplace it is important that we don’t act biased and take decision with rational thinking instead of emotional thinking. To be effective in collaboration, all stakeholders must identify the fact that collaborative efforts bring greater outcome than individual effort could bring.

It is obvious that COVID 19 will bring radical changes to all the aspects of business, especially the way we used to communicate will be altered into a new way. There will be barriers, glitches, hinders to the meaning of messages and people at large will be encouraged to invoke the common culture and practice the usual way of communication. There is no doubt that future form of communication will heavily depend on technology. Even though it will be technologically driven, the importance of COO’s will not be compromised rather it will keep increasing.

From this article, I got to learn about the measurable effects of the Covid-19 crisis when it comes to organizational communication. Increased anxiety level among business leaders and communication officers in terms of internal and external organizational communication actually affects the overall performance of the business. One interesting fact that piqued my curiosity was to learn that 63% would rather rely on the information provided by their workplace than any other sources. That is exactly why organizations should be forthcoming and trustful when it comes to communicating with employees during an ongoing crisis.

Leaders should be able to provide any information asked in a clear, concise and understandable manner. This ensures trustfulness of the organization. At the end of the day, any organization is as good as it's people. Effective communication from the leadership and employees ensure that everyone is at the same boat. While difference of views is allowed, at the end of the day, an organization has to represent shared thought or hub-mind in front of the public. This is why learning to communicate effectively as a leader in any organization is important.

Due to the pandemic, employees are forced to communicate and carry out organization activities through digital channels. This is actually proving that in order to run a business effectively, organizations do not necessarily need to invest a lot on real estate. Employees can exist anywhere in the world as long as effective communication takes place bringing in actual results. This might reduce the way the world works forever. Future business communication will be far more technology based and internet driven than in the decades it has been before. As a result emergence of a new digital working culture is inevitable. The new barriers would not be cultural differences among employees, rather online behavior patterns among difference corporations.
