1. There are many places that they can be taken to be recycled, but in reality figures show that only 1% of all plastic bags are recycled, with most heading for landfill, or worse, our oceans.

2. Plastic bags tend to disrupt the environment in a serious way
3.  If the ban does not also cover paper bags, it is likely that retailers may experience an increased demand for paper bags immediately following the introduction of a ban.
4. But perhaps a bigger problem is the sheer number of plastic bags that we consume globally, (the current estimates are 500 million to 1Bn throughout the entire world).

The non-profit Worldwatch Institute reports that at least 267 species of marine wildlife are known to have suffered from entanglement or ingestion of marine debris, most of which is composed of plastic; tens of thousands of whales, birds, seals and turtles die every year from contact with ocean-borne plastic bags.

  1. Plastic bags can also be healthier to use. Germs from raw meat and vegetables can live a lot longer on cloth or paper bags than they do on plastic bags.
  2.  Some people take plastic bags back to the store the next time they shop. Others pack their lunches in them. And many people use them to pick up after their dogs. 
  3. Some stores are trying bags made from more Earth-friendly materials, like corn. 
  4. Of all the sins of supermarkets, it is hilarious that plastic bags are the main cause of people's concern.
  5. Plastic bags have a bad reputation, but banning them could have some surprising negative effects. A ban could lead to less convenience in day-to-day life and even have economical repercussions without making a truly significant improvement to the environment.
  6. Plastic bags are stronger and cheaper to make. They are light and easy to use and store.
