Everyone has a digital identity the question is do we really know what information is ‘out there’ about ourselves and who can see it. Many employers will now check your social media before offering you employment. While we are online there are different ways of presenting ourselves. Such as on Facebook one would be more social but if blogging in regards to your studies or work one would be more professional. We need to remember that once our information is realised into the digital world it’s near impossible to erase it.

As most people are now surfing the net and are becoming more tech savvy we need to make sure our digital identities are digitally secure. We are told that to help protect ourselves online we should take on multiple identities. There are boot camps and workshops that can help with managing ones digital identity. According to Common Sense Media we have a digital foot print, we leave our mark every time we log on to a web site. What you do online can be found, seen, passed on and copied even by people you don’t know. It can be permanent and is out there forever.

According to Binary Tattoo ‘Our digital identity, or tattoo, is the permanent collection of data about us that is available online. Each time we post a picture, a blog, a status or a tweet, we are adding to that digital identity’. The world as it once was is very different to how it is now. We need to protect our children and ourselves. Just as there are criminals in the world there are also criminals in the digital world. They are ready and able to steal your identity (and much more) and become you online, hacking into your accounts and seeing all your personal information.
