https://doi.org/10.2307/3089364

In this study the issue of sensationalizing racism and police brutality bring to light a growing problem. Ross raises the question of who decides what racism and what police violence becomes coverable in the news. The concept of how ironic it is that society relies on media for information but also allows it to govern our ideas of racism is relevant to Whitehead's Nickel Boys because the same things essentially play out in his story.

Stoever covers some great concepts and realities with her work. The most relevant to my idea of irony in Whitehead's Nickel Boys is how black people are "given" the expectation of behavior, but are then brutalized for both, adhering to that expectation and for not meeting that expectation. This is the premise for what what happens to Elwood and what ultimately allows Whitehead to create his story.

Certain segments, such as "the disruption of our practical Identity" and "moral suspicion" and "moral" imperfection can be tied to the situational and dramatic irony Whitehead relies on for readers to tap into their understandings and bias. I will use this source to help explain each type of irony in the story.

In particular, how it is ironic that white systems don't want black workers, yet due to the lack of black representation, black children are not treated fairly. This ties into the Nickel Boys, Dozier School etc.

Since music is important to most people using it to speak about social issues, racism, and other oppressions stand to reach more people. It stands to reason that including an important message or call to actio in a song would have a positive outcome.
