Shackles were used when slaves were forced to walk long distances and when they were transported in ships. The shackles made it difficult for enslaved people to run away. Shackles were used on enslaved people in America from 1619, when the first African slaves were brought to Virginia, until the 1860s."

The John Rankin house was one of the famous stations on the Underground Railroad. The famously photographed “Freedom Stairway” was a stairway made up on one hundred steps that led from the Ohio River to the John Rankin House. John Rankin (1793-1886) was a Presbyterian minister and educator who devoted much of his life to the antislavery movement. The house has several secret rooms in which fugitive slave were hidden. A light was placed in the window of the house to indicate that it was safe for fugitive slaves to approach. (Key was used from 1822-1865)"
