Building supplies often came from junk yards and garbage cans.

Herbert Hoover was not a favorable president. He did little to address the issues of The Great Depression. Because of this, Franklin Roosevelt defeated him in the 1932 election. During Hoover's term, America was in a harsh place with a poor economy. To improve this, Roosevelt created a plan to recover from the Depression known as the New Deal.

In the early 1930's the economy was not doing well and the GDP was low as seen in the chart. In 1929, the gross national product, how much money is earned through goods and services in a year, fell by about 30% from $104.4 billion to $74.2 billion. Marriage and birth rates also dropped because people needed to focus on finances rather then their personal lives.

Jim Crows Laws were a set of rules between 1877 (the end of reconstruction) and 1950 (the civil rights movement) that were passed by congress which separated blacks and whites. These laws separated where white and black people did everyday activities, including going to school, using water fountains, bathrooms and other important daily activities. There were signs identifying which race could use a facility, which were marked by "color" or "Whites Only".
