The Triple Alliance was a secret agreement formed by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy in May 1882. In 1879 Austria-Hungary and Germany made an agreement that if attacked by Russia, they would help each other. Italy was added to this alliance with an agreement that if attacked by France, Germany, and Austria-Hungary would support Italy. Italy would assist Germany if they were attacked by France, and if a conflict occurred between Russia and Austria-Hungary, Italy would stay neutral.

One month after Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist, because of his violent threat to Serbia, with Germany’s encouragement, Austria-Hungary declared war. Russia being on Serbia’s side, France also gets involved. Then Germany declared war on Russia, as well as France soon after. In fear of Germany’s control in Europe, England came into the war. These fights led to WWI.

Germany encouraged France and Russia to form an alliance in 1894. This is because Germany had a fear of being isolated and wanted to maintain power. This made Germany have a closer alliance with the Austro-Hungarian empire.

Germany’s ruler caused a possible war by making Austria-Hungary invade Serbia, knowing that a conflict might occur.

In 1892, Franco-Russian military convention agreed to protect eachother when attacked. The triple entente has the United Kingdom linked with France, and the triple alliance has Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy (until Italy sided with the Triple Entente).

Austria-Hungary immediately declared war on Serbia because a Serbian revolutionary had assassinated Franz Ferdinand. We can blame Austria-Hungary for the cause of WWI because they were the ones who declared war without thinking twice and allied with Germany. They had many other options to think about, for example, they wanted payment from Serbia or many other ways. But Austria-Hungary's foreign policy was very aggressive, and that made Austria-Hungary declare war immediately.

Blank cheque: 白紙小切手

Austria Hungry's heir to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed by a member of the Black Hands (A national group from Serbia)

Germany sent a Blank cheque to Austria Hungry which had the meaning “We will give you as much military support you guys need if you want to invade Serbia”. Which was on 1914 July, 5

When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in June by a Serbian terrorist group(black hand), Austria-Hungary decided to give a list of demands to Serbia that were very unreasonable. Serbia refused to agree with them and so Austria-Hungary decided to invade Serbia. When they invaded they were encouraged by Germany with the "blank cheque" representing unlimited military support. Germany was looking for a reason to begin its wish to start its take over Europe. But if Serbia is invaded, Serbia's main ally, Russia will defend them. This was how WWI started, so one can blame Austria-Hungary for invading Serbia but one can also blame Germany for encouraging them.

APA reference "How The World Went To War In 1914"

https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/how-the-world-went-to-war-in-1914#:~:text=When%20Archduke%20Franz%20Ferdinand%20was,encouraged%20by%20its%20ally%20Germany.

"Germany's Blank Cheque to Austria-Hungary"(2015)

https://encyclopedia.1914-1918-online.net/article/germanys_blank_cheque_to_austria-hungary

”ブランクチェック Blank Cheque"

https://academic-accelerator.com/encyclopedia/jp/blank-cheque
