"Tenure is not an iron clad gaurantee of job security" (Ch 1, Pg 4)
- I chose this quote because I have too many conversations with people who think once you're in you're never coming out no matter what you do. That is just not true in the slightest. Tenure is just saying you're a permident teacher at that school. You can still get fired if you choose to do stupid things.

-It changed my thinking because when I was younger, when i heard tenure i always thought it meant you just couldn't be fired.

"Can I excite, motivate and inspire my students?' (Ch 1, Pg 7)
- This was a question asked in the text. I chose this because as a teacher this is a very important question to ask yourself. Students will only learn if they want too. If they're distant or unmotivated and uninterested. It could be next to impossible to teach them anything.

- So as a future educator it will be a priority to keep the kids motivated and interested because a classroom like that is a great learning atmosphere.

"Teachers desire more autonomy and control over their careers, and like all of us, want to be treated with more respect." (Ch 1, Pg 8)
- I selected this quote because as a future teacher, I can tell you if i was a teacher right now with common core, id be real upset. How does some dude in a suit making 200k a year know whats best for the kids in the classroom? When was the last time they were actually in a classroom? Teachers should have control over their cirriuclum because they are the only ones who truly know how those students learn.

- Teachers are the most underpaid and under appreciated professionals in the real world. They are teaching the future of out country. Yet somehow everything they do is "questionable" in others eyes.

(Ch 2, Pg 26)
- I chose this quote because I remember growing up how annoyed I got when it came to that word. At a young age I realized that everyone has their own things they just know more about than others. Just because I couldn't tell you what happened in the river valley civilizations at the beginning of mankind, doesn't mean I don't know the derivative of an exponential equation.

- As a future educator I will make it a priority to judge students based on effort not skill in a specific subject.

(Ch 2, Pg 28)
- Growing up in my neighborhood was a blessing and I didnt even know it. Every day after school on the bus ride home, about 15 of us would be talking about what we were going to do after school every day. As kids, i think we need that fresh air and the running around and our imaginations. I believe it shaped us into the respectful and polite well rounded young adults. Kids now a days are getting more and more disrespectful due to the dehumanization of the video games they play all day long.

- It changed my thinking because now it makes sense. In grade school we would have recess because it promotes learning.

(Ch 2, Pg 32)
- This quote stood out to me because of how true that statement is. Growing up, it seemed my teachers in grade schools really didn't take that into consideration too much. An artistic student would learn through pictures and drawing better, me an artistically chalanged student, find it easier to look at my notes and write them down.

- This is a reminder that each kid is an individual. So some teaching methods will work and some wont with every single kid. So its important to take that into consideration when planning a lesson.

"Although we all like to think of ourselves as fair, our self-deception is deep." (Ch 3, Pg 53)
- I chose this quote because in the school system there is clearly so much we dont see. So many biases and unfair treatment that goes un noticed. Whether its because the teacher is unaware, or they are aware and are just ignorant. As a boy we obviously goofed around a lot more which translated to getting yelled at more. However, the girls have their own version of it and it goes un noticed. So that would effect the atmosphere of the classroom.

- This made me think about me and if I am like that as well. Turns out we all have a chip on our shoulder for some type of person. So i will make sure to be fair.

(Ch 3 , Pg 63)
-The ability to do well in school depends on so much more than the students willingness. Economic status, race and language barriers can really effect how a student performs. Not only that, but their home life also effects their ability to learn.

- Teachers should be teaching students the same. Their background and home life need to be taken into consideration to create a safe zone for that student.

(Ch 3, Pg 64)
- As an answer to this Id just like to point out how unfair and bias this is. Just because the color of their skin or the language they speak shouldn't effect how they are taught. Teachers of all people should know that kids are just kids, regardless of what they have to deal with at home they should be treated the same as the rest of them. If anything the classroom should be the students safe haven.

-Like I said previously, kids need to be taught and treated the same regardless of how we feel about them.

(Ch 4, Pg 84)
- Obviously as a student this stood out to me among other similar lines. Its true, student receive their schedules late August, taking classes they barley talked about with an advisor, sitting through them all year long listening to the teacher teach. Its also true that students rarely ask questions, persoanlly as a learner I NEED too. However, the social norm for the classroom is just the teacher talks and students listen. Thats not a good way to be.

-I believe students need to be involved in able for them to learn. Weather its asking questions or trying to think for themselves, i believe students need to be heard.

In order or kids to really understand a lesson, they need to understand it in their language. What better way to do that then let two kids make sense of it together.

(In reference to why kids dropout) "...Classes are too boring, and students feel academically and socially disengaged."
-If we're being honest, middle school years are basically a war zone. Everyones finding out where they fit in, where they belong, whats cool, whats not. This plays a big role with success in academics. The students who tend to feel more comfortable tend to do better for obvious reasons. As well as the boring classes. Some students are more vocal aren't afraid to speak their mind. Realistically what middle schooler REALLY wants to learn about the basics. I even questioned why we couldn't take classes that interested us.

- As a future educator I promise to make sure kids are involved and interested. (Ch 5, Pg 114)
- While I don't agree with this for public schools now a days. I do agree with the part that says schools save souls. When I say that I don't mean the same thing they meant back then. I mean that the kids who follow the schools path and stay in school and take their education seriously tend to have better moral development. They learn how to become a part of society and what to do and what not to do.

Would mixing the two kinds of curriculum together actually dilute the students learning? I do so believe it would because it would be a huge game of stop and go for the kids. I don't think that a behaviorist type classroom would work unless it was a group of special learner students. I believe that is the only setting it would work because those students thrive when it comes to positive reinforcment.

"The 2008 recession caused most states to make deep cuts to schools budget, often effecting the neediest students."
-This quote also stood out to me for obvious reasons. However, I know that when times are tough and moneys tight some things need to go. But I do NOT agree with cutting things that are there to help the students who need it the most. If a student is struggling and needs more help and is or has been making obvious efforts to do so, I don't think their tutor or whatever it is should be cut. As an athlete I never thought id say this but the 100 new football jerseys every other year can wait a little longer until all the students are getting what they need academically. (Ch 8 , Pg 216)
-After reading through these couple of paragraphs I almost feel sick to my stomach. So you're telling me a teacher in one state can drink and drive and smoke all the pot they want, while a teacher in another lost her job due to her not attending church? I believe teachers should have more rights and a better support system so things like this dont happen. I know theres the unions etc. However, something needs to change.

"Some students and parents have sued school districts for failing to provide and adequate education." (Ch 8, Pg 220)
-Over the years, being in the school system and around it. Everyone has some crazy story to tell. However, the most irrational way to look at the situation of weather or not a student is being taught the proper information is to look at the teacher. When a teacher or professor is teaching they know they are talking to a very diverse group of kids. Weather its 2 or 200 they are going to teach the material a couple different ways. Its up to the students to do what they need to do to interpret it. Thats called learning. I don't know when we started putting the blame on the most underpaid group of workers in our society.

In this day and age you would think society as a whole would agree on the fact that we should hire the best suited person for the job. Not just based on who you know regardless of a union or not.

"Some charter schools offer teachers more freedom than the traditional neighborhood school, allowing educators to create their own standards and curriculum." (Ch 9, Pg 255)
-I chose this quote because it could be either a good thing or a bad thing. Depending on the teacher and their view of academic standards, they could create an enviroment in which the students are challenged but not to the point they want to give up. The can create the standards on the class as a whole so it will be easier for the students to catch on and learn. On the other hand it could also be a bad thing. The teacher could be there for the sole purpose of the paycheck and not give a damn about the kids at all. Which would just be setting them up for failure in the years to come.

Why would a musically inclined student have to focus on triginometry and physics when they have absolutly no desire to pursue anything of that nature in the future? Why would we take away the individuality of the students and make them more into just numbers more that we already are? If its change they want, they might want to start looking in the other direction.
