We hope you never second-guess your decisions that day and soon will be able to heal from the traumatic event. Reminiscing on the day, our son jokingly says “we were just talking to Mr McKeon about the Taylor Swift concert when it all went down” , so maybe someday you can finish telling about how you are a Swiftie! ;)

Thank you again for caring so deeply about your students.

We are grateful for all the faculty and staff of St. John’s Prep who spend so much of their time with our boys preparing them for what life shall bring in the years ahead. This past week’s incident demonstrated just how much care, concern and regard you all have for our sons and each other. While it may only have been an exercise in the end there were countless examples of how our sons were prepared for making quick decisions while looking out for one another. We are all truly grateful that this was a hoax, but in those moments it was very real and most if not all will not forget the feelings they had, where they were, and how they managed through the events of Last Monday. Our thanks to everyone in the SJP community including those businesses and families who live adjacent to our campus who aided, protected, and shielded our boys from the potential threat of harm we are forever grateful!

Cheryl & Joshua Block
P’24

We always thought that sending our son to SJP was probably one of the best decisions we have ever made. It was completely validated to my husband and I on that Monday when every faculty member and every student came together and did what they could given the circumstances. We never thought that a community beyond our family could care for our son the way that we do. Since the moment he entered the doors of the middle school he has been nurtured from the inside out. Cared for like parents care for they're children as well as challenged academically. We couldn't be more proud or feel more secure having him there. Thank you to everyone who acted on impulse, and made decisions in the moment that day. You all all heros in our eyes.
Dan & Nicole Sica

We want to thank all the faculty, staff & administrators that were on campus that day. It is every parents worst nightmare to hear their child is in danger at school - a place of safety. The school did a great job communicating with parents via text as the situation unfolded. Senora Lonero kept her class calm to exit when the door didn’t lock. Keeping calm and knowing what to do was paramount in everyone staying safe. As a parent seeing my son with Mr Foley on Summer St it again assured me The Prep had this under control. We pray our community never faces this situation again but you all proved you can handle even the most stressful of situations with grace.
May you all find time to relax with your families after the difficult year the SJP community has endured.
Thank you & God Bless,
Andrew & Jennifer Greenfield P’20, P’25

What do you say to the people that put your child’s life in front of their own? Who stayed to comfort, lead, shelter. Words simply aren’t commensurate. Nor is any gift. All I have is the sincere gesture of pure, raw gratitude for every single teacher, administrator, police officer, and staff member who watched out for my son during the scariest moment of his young life. From the bottom of my heart, with every ounce of my being, thank you. I know I will never have the opportunity to repay any of you, nor will meet all of you, I just hope you know I hold you deeply in my heart forever. I feel so fortunate to be at the Prep when the unthinkable happened not once but twice, and to experience the grace, professionalism, and transparency of your communication and leadership. I truly feel your response is a model for all institutions experiencing a crisis. My wish for all of you is that you find peace and a bit of respit this summer. It is much deserved. Never wavering from what matters most; the well being and education of our sons. For that, we are extremely grateful.

A special shout-out to Mrs. Fondell and Ms. Burtis!

Since our son started at the Prep three years ago, the faculty, administration and staff have handled every difficulty that has come their way with kindness, grace and, above all else, a commitment to ensuring all students feel safe, valued and loved. The traumatic events last week put us all on edge, but I can’t tell you how much we appreciate our son’s Latin teacher, Ms. Solomon, remaining calm and kind as the boys barricaded themselves in the classroom with her. We are also grateful to one of my son’s classmate’s mom, who gave him a ride to the Stop & Shop parking lot where I was waiting. Thank you to everyone at SJP for your efforts on Monday 5/22 and for your continued support and compassion for our students. 💙 🦅 Kate and Mark Aengenheyster P’24

Our family would like to take this opportunity to thank all the faculty and administration for the time and dedication you have given to our son throughout the years. There have been challenges for our children and you all have been right there supporting them and our families. We hope you know, we have all of you in our prayers, as you too shared them along with us. We send our children entrusting their minds and spirit with you and we have watched our sons grow each year into young men of character and faith. We are so grateful to be part of the St John’s Prep community. And so blessed to have the administration and faculty be the role models and examples for our sons. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Have a well deserved relaxing and wonderful summer.

I called my son and he said they barricaded themselves in their classroom and I couldn’t come in. I was frantic and Mr. Barszcz got on the phone and reassured me they were following the proper safety protocol. He didn’t have to do that and I appreciated hearing his voice along with my sons. What a horrific hour that was for all of us and I can’t thank you enough Mr. Barszcz, for following every safety measure to protect our kids. Thank you with all of my heart.

To the Faculty and Staff @ The Prep, we are sending you heartfelt gratitude for your steady support all yearlong, especially in times of crisis like last week. Monday, May 22nd, was a terrifying day, but you made it a day of strength and unity. We want to especially thank both Mr. Vazquez and Senora Curran for running with dozens of students to a safe house many blocks away. Mr. Vazquez kindly passed his phone around to all of the students without a phone to reach out to their parents/guardians, including our son Quinn ‘28. And, we were really moved to learn that Senora Curran led a prayer for all of the students while they held hands. Lastly, to Dr. Hardiman and the entire staff - you instill such comfort and confidence in your timely, clear, transparent and supportive communications - thank you! We are wishing you all the best this summer! Warm Regards, Karen and Mike Panos

You have kept our 3 sons grounded & safe throughout all the chaos. We especially want to express gratitude to Mrs. Roy in the Middle School, who my son has said how impressed he was with how she handled everything and he felt so safe with her & his classmates. In addition, our two sons in the high school, their teachers Mr. Barcz & Mr. Ford kept our children safe & calm in such a chaotic experience. All throughout this year, you have all shown such care & compassion with our sons. Ms. Chris & Mr. Larocque & Ms. Michaelson, also did such an amazing job keeping calm and directing us through the experience of last Monday. We are so beyond thankful for all the teachers and staff and all of you who make up this wonderful school. We are beyond proud to be a part of this wonderful Community of parents & great leadership. Thank you for all that you day to day, we are beyond grateful.

Dear St. John’s Administration, Faculty, and Staff,

I write to you this thank you note not just as a parent, but as a member of this incredible community that you’ve helped build and sustain at St. John’s.

The measure of a community is not how it acts during its best times, but how it comes together during its hardest. Through a tough last couple of months and especially last week, you exemplified what it means to be a part of something bigger than yourself. You showed our boys, and indeed all of us, that even on the toughest days, there is hope, resilience, and a common purpose that binds us together.

The challenges we faced have made us stronger. They’ve reminded us of our shared humanity and our ability to look after one another. You put our children first, ensuring their safety and well-being. That is a testament to your character, and it’s something that makes us all proud.

So thank you, once again, for your courage, your empathy, and your unwavering commitment to the young men of St. John’s. Together, we are building a future that is brighter, stronger, and full of hope.

Warmly,

Dan and Daniela Codreanu
P’29

I've started writing this several times but it's hard to put into words all that SJP means to us. In particular, we appreciate the theme of servant leadership and the way the Xaverian values are woven into all aspects of school life. Although this has been an incredibly challenging year, the Prep always rises to the occasion, handling every difficult situation with grace under pressure.
To Dr. Hardiman, Dr. Crowley and all the teachers (Mr. McKeon!), administrators and other staff members, we pray this summer is one of healing and recovery from must have been some of the worst days of your professional lives. The way your students acted on May 22 is a reflection of all that you have instilled in them.
Kristin and Geoff Pechinsky ('89), P'24, P'28

We were filled with sheer terror but now knowing how everything was handled is so heartwarming and reassuring. We want to thank Mrs. Livermore especially for taking such good care of Henry and not just that day but all year. And a thank you to Mrs. Nazarro for giving that smile and a hug when Flynn needed it the most.

To the teachers, coaches, faculty and staff, we want to thank you all for the tremendous support everyone has extended to our sons over the years.

A single word has the power to bring intense emotion. On May 22nd, that word was "SHOOTER", sent via text by our son as he ran away from the school through the surrounding woods. A word no parent should ever have to read. A word no child should ever have to write.

As I sped up 95 to Danvers, still unsure of what was happening, the word "PLEASE" fell from my lips. As in "Please, Lord protect our Prep community."

Later, Sean would tell us that after the initial announcement Mr. Mackinson calmly told his students to "GO!" There was no mistaking the urgency or intent of that word. Mr. Mackinson had no hesitation in that intense moment.

In the woods, Sean found Coach Broderick, who assured him everything would be "FINE." While Coach was likely still unsure about the situation, his confidence did not waver, and allowed our son a brief moment of peace in the chaos.

After all the children and staff were safely accounted for, Dr. Hardiman stood STRONG. Our Head of School, resilient and sturdy as always.

A final, single word to sum up our feelings of that day... GRATEFUL.

Erin and Tim Reilly, P'23 P'25

As a family of a '20 and a '22 grad as well as an 8th grade Eagle, we have witnessed first hand the incredible mission driven leadership and the passionate dedication of faculty through challenging times. On that Monday, SJP experienced a sudden shared humility in those moments of uncertainty and shock, and SJP grew closer as a community because of the many acts of selflessness and kindness. Thank you to SJP leadership, faculty, and staff for creating such an environment; as Dr. Crowley has stated, "community is our strength." Our 8th grade son, Seamus, verbalized his concerns for the young new faculty members in the middle school, given all they have experienced this year. We hope you feel the strength and spirit of SJP as you grow in your profession as an educator, as you are surrounded by many role models that continue to inspire our sons.

Wishing all staff and faculty very long summer days of peaceful rest, Eileen and Jim O'Holleran '20, '22, '27

I appreciate all of you, the constant communication that day and the importance each of you placed on of the safety of our boys.

St. John’s Prep has had a difficult year, with some devastating challenges. But through those challenges the school, its community and the faculty & staff only reinforces what we, as parents, already knew.

On May 20, 2020, a St. John’s Prep bus arrived in our driveway with Dr. Hardiman and Dr. Crowley on board to celebrate the graduation of our oldest. Mr. Farrington made the trek dressed in his full academic regalia and, though socially distanced, we took graduation photos and celebrated with family. It was a situation where St. John’s went above and beyond to celebrate a group of boys who had missed out on so much and we were thankful.

On Saturday, May 20, 2023 we celebrated a wonderful graduation ceremony under the commencement tent for one of our second oldest and one of our nephews . We were so thankful of the the time and effort that went into making graduation week and the ceremony itself so special.

The following Monday, we, along with the entire prep community experienced a tragedy. Absolutely nothing prepares you for getting a message that there is a possible shooter at your child’s school. Knowing that our youngest was in Ben Hall along with one of our nephews and that their aunt works on campus and two other nephews were in the high school buildings - it was a shock to the system that I am still feeling. Incredibly, 3 of the boys were able to get out and run and actually ended up together at a house where they were supported by teachers and strangers who came together to help. The fourth was secure on campus and ended up under the commencement tent to be reunited with family. The boys who had run got word to us where they were, and that they were safe, and as a family we were able to get to the boys.

The staff and administration of St. John’s Prep have had so much to deal with over the past years, but their coordination and communication during a time of pure chaos was amazing. Their efforts to take care of the boys, the families and of each other are an incredible example for all. Please accept our thanks for keeping the boys safe, sheltering them from harm and helping to teach them at even at the scariest moments, there are so many good people in their world.

We wish you a much deserved relaxing summer.

Marc & Samantha Mercier ‘20, ‘23 ‘28
