The states in this alliance are Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Through economic growth, they have all increased their hard power.

As the now-famous group of large emerging economies develops, they're beginning to encounter several of the problems that powerful states deal with regularly. First, Brazil became the 'sick man' of the group due to the Zika virus epidemic. Additionally, Brazil’s economy is performing poorly and corruption scandals are overflowing in the media. Despite all of these potentially destabilizing dilemmas, Brazil has been able to remain somewhat firm by beginning the process of holding its wrongdoers accountable. For example, A number of high-level politicians and businessmen have been accused, prosecuted, and thrown in jail for participating in a corruption scheme that diverted money from the state-owned oil company in order to finance political favors.
