Luke and Offred escape attempt flashback: Series/Novel Comparison(Jaylen)

In the novel, Atwood is very descriptive in painting the atmosphere including the fear of this traumatic experience where Offred is separated from her daughter. In this scene Luke, Offred, and their daughter attempt to escape the hands of the new Gilead society where the fate for healthy women is to bear children for those who can't.
The author italicizes the words that Offred hears and speaks which allows the reader to feel the suspense building up and the same fear that Offred felt. The fact that the present tense is being used to describe this past experience also puts the readers in the shoes of Offred. For example, Atwood writes, "I'm running, with her, holding her hand, pulling, dragging her through the bracken, she's only half awake because of the pill I gave her, so she wouldn't cry or say anything that would give us away, she doesn't know where she is"(74). Here, their escape is actively depicted as the reader can picture them running away. Similarly, the director does a great job depicting this gloomy scene through their use of camera angles and close ups. Image one displays Offred looking bad as she hears gunshots and realizes that Luke could have been shot. In addition to that suspense, image two displays an aerial shot of how open the space is that they are running in. This causes the viewer to speculate whether or not they are going to get caught. The author and the director are similar in their creation of suspense throughout the whole scene. However, they differ in some of the details surrounding the scene. For example, in the novel, Atwood is telling us what is going on in the mind of Offred as they are trying to escape while in the series, the viewer can only assume what she is thinking through her actions. Atwood writes, "I have my hiking books on and I think, when we reach the water I'll have to take them off, will it be too cold, will she be able to swim that far, what about the current, weren't expecting this"(75). This technique is effective as the reader can feel her sense of urgency and infer that her adrenaline is rushing. In the series the viewer relies on Offred's and her daughter's facial expressions to convey the same thoughts. These techniques are effective in their own individuals ways as they both essentially convey the moment Offred's life changes and she becomes a Handmaid in the Gilead society.

General Setting Comparison

General comparison - setting
The setting in the novel and series is very distinctive. In the novel, we are presented with a more traditional and older environment. We have this insight by reading Offred's description of the places she goes. She describes the buildings as more traditional and old. In comparison, the series are set in 2017. Therefore, there are advanced technologies. For example, the characters all had phones, computers, etc. We can see it as well in the hospital. The change of setting in the series is an effective authorial choice because the viewers will connect personally more to the story. Since it is set more recently, the viewers will also be able to see themselves inside of Gilead's world.

Janine testifying Series/ Novel Comparison (Ellie)

In the Novel,Atwood’s presentation of the scene was very frank and open. She did not present the reader with ample descriptions; she unveiled the scene as it was normal. First the audience is told that she testfied to being gang raped at 14 and subsquenlty had an abortion. We see a glimpse of Janine’s personality as the author states that many make up their stories to testify however ,Janine being the person that she is, her story is genuinely probably true. Her violent sexual assault was not transpired as she was reprehanded, held accounted and scolded for something that was beyond her control. The author emphasized this point as she stated first,“Her fault, her fault, her fault, we chant in unison”. This quote exemplifies the specific authorial choice of repetition and harmony, the perfect agreement that the girls were forced to be in as they chanted together against Janine. The author continues on to say “Why did God allow such a terrible thing to happen?Teach her a lesson. Teach her a lesson. Teach her a lesson.” This quote exemplifies the meaning behind this scene that this traumatic event that we stress that it is not the victim's fault is completely turned around here. Janine is not victimized but rather looked at as the perpetrator and deserving of the act.

Similarly in the show the audience is shown the reaction of Janine’s testimony. However in the book we are shown a visualization that captures the audience's attention. First we see the specific directorial choice as the camera zooms in on Janine in the beginning of the scene as we see her patched up face and she looks like the perfect victim. Then the vivid capture of all the girls in a circle surrounding Janine which would symbolize and remind one of a comfort circle for example aaa meetings, a safe place. However it is the complete opposite when Aunt Lydia bends down and asks who’s fault. The pointing of the finger and unison in her fault as the camera jumps from one girl to another enacting and positioned in the same way. The slap that Offred gets is also very significant as the audience is shown the pressure and the obligation that the handsmaids have.

Novel vs Series Characters (Comparison)

Offred's personality differs from the one in the book. Whereas in the book the protagonist is more passive, the show presents her as a woman with headstrong personality and revolutionary goals. This change was made in order to add greater suspense to the show, creating emphasis between the audience and the character, which ultimately increases the relationship between viewer and story. This change affects the story in a way that it portrays another perspective of June which is not shown in the novel, being much more survivalist and aggressive, wanting to fight. This adds tension in the series compared to the book. I believe that this change creates a higher demand for the movie, as the book may not have created this suspense or tension.

Ogflen, a supporting character and one of Offred's main companions is much more prominent in the series as her perspective and story is crucial for the development of the depiction of a cruel and disturbing justice system. Furthermore, her traits and personality are much more explored in the series and she even gets a different fate from the book's original ending.

Janine is a critical character in the book and the series. She does everything that she can to survive and protect her values. In this scene, she is depicted as highly suicidal, not just going crazy. Something is happening in her mind that is not normal or casual. In the series she is contemplating suicide, which can be seen visually. In the series she is much more rebellious than in the book. This is because her baby means a woman safety, however its taken away from her after she is tased, raped, and her child is given to her rapist wife.

"She manages to produce a baby, a new life, but that life cannot be sustained and the baby becomes a ‘shredder’ (p36, pp133–37, p226).
