Chapter 10 is important as it shows how the boys have changed since the death of Simon and how the power to lead the island has fallen into Jack’s hands which results in the ‘tribe’ falling apart. Chapter 10 also shows how the symbols such as ‘the beast’ and the conch shell become important for the characters Jack and Ralph. For example, when Jack is obtained with all the power in his tribe, the ‘beast’ of the island becomes more prominent to him, while on the other hand after loosing the power power, Ralph reaches a low and uses the conch shell for solace which symbolises that the order of civilisation on the island is now gone.

Ralph and Piggy then have debates and arguments about it being an accident or intentional. "That was murder"
"You stop it!" said Piggy shrilly." Ralph states the truth, though Piggy is in denial.

Admitting to their guilt was very hard for many Nazis and it would force them to question what kind of people they really were.

The morning after Simons death Ralph notices that Piggy, Sam and Eric and a few littuns are still a part of his camp. Ralph believes that Simons death was murder, but Piggy insists that it was a mere accident and doesn't want Sam and Eric to know that him and Ralph were somewhat involved with the death. Sam and Eric also do not want to admit their involvement with the death. Jack begins to act more and more like a cruel leader and dictator to his tribe members and plans to raid Ralphs camp to get the fire for another pig he plans to kill. Jack and his tribe invade Ralph’s tribe and steal Piggy’s glasses. at first they thought they were there for the conch but then realised that they stole the power to make fire.
