philosophy of integrating technology with emergent bilinguals

I appreciate the different areas of focus for the following considerations in integrating technology with language learners:

Technology has the potential to meet the needs of all learners and their unique skills in different modes of language: listening, speaking, reading, writing. This is because technology can be highly visual, but necessarily text heavy, giving emergent bilinguals new avenues for expression and comprehension.

Technology is an amazing resource in an of itself when it comes to proficiency levels of emergent bilingual learners. Educators have many options when they wish to infuse their lessons with design, imagery and symbols, tools for hearing text read aloud and employing graphic organizers to make sure students comprehend information regardless of how much text is included.

Technology affords teachers and students countless means to engage in the the four c’s: critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity + culture. By creating or consuming information, emerging bilinguals engage in an important give and take of the online learning community.

With the right kind of intentional planning, educators can provide targeted support of academic language development and content through their choice of different technological tools. Just as we have many ways in which we like to learn best, technology has as many ways to support thriving learning communities.

The shift in technology's focus on teacher centered vs. student centered presents important questions to consider while choosing the appropriate technological tool for your diverse group of students: How might one use the tech? (As a resource you provide students? As a tool within your instruction? In the hands of your learners with them as consumers? In the hands of your learners with them as producers?)

Cafeful attention should be paid to the instructional setting and planning by asking oneself How would you use the tech if you only have access to one computer, or you have one-to-one laptops, or you have tablets? What kind of preparation would you have to do prior to integrating them in a way that supports language learning? With this framework, educators can design activities and resources to meet their emerging bilinguals' needs.

Finally, professional development is an important component of answering the question How will you continue to develop and grow in your understanding of using technology to support language learners? As lifelong learners teaching lifelong learners, we must constantly seek ways in which we can improve our practice.

Critically thinking about the media we are consuming is an important connection to the work we do as a community of emergent bilinguals. It is important to consider to what extant are our learners consumers of technology and producers of technology?
