This first week of summer classes had a quick start off. To be honest, I thought that the summer classes started on Monday July 3, but when I saw the schedule and realized that started this week I sort of freaked out, but then I calmed down. I knew that a month of class was nothing compared to a semester so I thought that there was no problem.

As with all summer courses, the first week it’s kind of easy in terms of work. This class is a little exception. Understandable tho, we only have 1 month to cover up many topics. The very first day after all the formalities and presentations of the course, the teacher gave us homework and all that. I thought that it was a little bit excessive at first, but then I realized that the homework she left us was kind of easy. The topics were ones that I had once seen in my career, the only problem was that the class starts at 7am so that first class I wasn’t very awake. After a quick face wash and a cup of coffee, I was able to continue with the class.

As far as I understood, the class is about the personal image and how we can project it the way we want to. In a marketing way, how to sell our image better. The topic got my attention. The first 2 activities the teacher gave us surely had to do with the image, but more about our self image and how we perceive ourselves. The first activity was to write our personal story, a very personal task. The second one was about some test that told us more about personalities and inspectionate about our goals and values of life. I felt I was on a psychology class, but I figured that for this class in particular we needed that introspective test to continue. And it was true.

The 3rd task we were assigned was to do an elevator pitch selling ourselves and our services to a company in a practitioner way. It was part investigation and part exposition task. The teacher showed us some ways to investigate, not only the mere surface, but look for a problem and try to figure out what that problem needed to be fixed. With these methods of search we proceeded to do our elevator pitch.

In conclusión, this first week had a big common denominator: knowing ourselves and knowing how to sell ourselves and our skills to others. These skills are surely needed on my field of work, because I am from marketing so the very idea of selling is vital in that field of studies. That’s why I think the rest of this class will be very useful, not only for my professional career but also for my personal development.

Coherence is the Key

This second week was full of new things to learn. We got to talk more about the principle of this class that is the subject of the types of images and how to project them to the people around us. We deepened our understanding on this topic and even did some fun activities related to it. Like selecting an outfit to project a different image of ourselves that we usually don't show on a daily basis. That was an interesting activity, in fact the strangest yet coolest task any teacher has ever asked me to do. I really enjoyed it.

Continuing with the topic, I think that the thing that got more stocked in my head was the six subordinate image types. Although they look simple at first glance, they have a really complex background. I always thought some of this types were just being fancy and respectful around the society, but it’s not. Its like a way to transmit a message to the world around you. I really think that this knowledge is very useful not only for my professional Marketing life, but for social skills in real life in general. I really think that knowing how to control and present the best part of yourself is an important part of life that needs to be learned at some point in life.

We also saw some perception research stuff. Although I have seen this topic before in my career, it’s always good to refresh the memory once in a while. It is also very important for my professional life because marketing is 50% strategy and 50% research. And the different aspects of a research can alter the results of it positively or negatively, depending on how well it is made.

In conclusion, this week’s classes were full of knowledge and fun activities, yet very interesting ones.

This third week was partially good and partially not. Good because of the topics we saw during the week. The bad part had nothing to do with the course, we only experienced an unusual amount of internet malfunctions during the week, but nothing we couldn't solve. Although we didn’t see any new topic per se, we started putting all we have seen so far together in order to build a document touching all those points and put them in perspective, so we can have a better understanding of our goals, style and personal/external perspective of ourselves. Then, make a coherence analysis to see if those results matched the ones we put first. This document was the Research Results and Coherence Diagnosis.

We kind of started working on this at the end of week 2, when we were assigned to conduct some interviews with questions about ourselves to people close to us. This was necessary for the coherence part we built later on. When we had the information we needed, we started to gather all together. We started with the results of the first test we did during our first week. Making summaries of the results. Then we established some objectives for the short and long run. What we wanted to do. Then we did a personal SWOT, this I believe we did in order to have an inner look of ourselves. Sometimes it is a hard task but this time I didn't feel it was so hard to do. We also did a self description and then we poured the result of our interviews on a chart. After all this we analyzed the results of ourselves, our close persons and the tests and made a thorough analysis of coherence.

This kind of exercise is good not only for our personal knowledge but also for our professional life. This type of analysis can show us what are our strengths and weak points. And also how the people around us perceive us. If they are good things, he has to make sure to keep and improve those traits, as for the bad ones, we can change and try to improve for the better. That way, we can grow to be not only good workers, but also good individuals.
