After reading Mila Gets Her Super Ears, do a “No Sound” activity with students. Every student will get earplugs or noise canceling headphones and ask the students to put them on. Next, go to YouTube and search a white noise sound and play it. Then, start reading a book over the white noise, while the students have their headphones on. After you finish reading, and the students take off their headphones, ask them to tell you what you just read. Ask the students how they felt about not being able to hear clearly, was it frustrating? Was it difficult? This will start the discussion about hearing impairment.

2. After reading Xander's Cerebral Palsy Superpowers, talk to the class about how Xander is non-verbal. This activity is going to be about communication without speaking. One student at a time, give them a simple sentence and tell them that they need to communicate this sentence to the rest of the class without speaking or writing any of the words. The students will then have to guess what their classmates are saying without them talking. After this activity, ask questions like: was this hard to do without talking? Was it hard for you to understand what the person was saying when they were not talking? What are some ways that you think that we could have understood what they were trying to tell us without them talking to us? This will get the conversation started about students that are not able to verbally communicate their needs and we can talk about ways to help others communicate

Students will discuss “invisible” and “visible” differences between the characters in one of the books. For example, drawing a picture of a person and on the inside of the body, write “invisible” differences that you can’t actually see (overstimulation, nervousness, etc). On the outside, write the “visible” differences (uses a wheelchair, has orthotics on their feet, etc). At the end of this discussion, have students create a list of ways that the characters are the same, despite their visible and invisible differences (good friends, caring, smart, etc). This is a way to identify differences and normalize them, and then emphasizing that people aren’t defined by their differences.

The next activity is a bucket filling activity. Talk to students about how Bucket Fillers are people who are good friends, good people, and are accepting of others. Bucket Dippers are people who bring others down and are discriminatory and not good friends. Draw a bucket on the board and have students describe what Bucket Fillers say and do to be Bucket Fillers, and how being accepting of disabilities is something that a bucket filler would do. 

Students will make a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting a character from one of the books to themselves. They will have some differences; one might use a wheelchair and one might not, but both are students, both are good friends, etc. This activity will teach students that even though there are differences amongst people, people share similarities,

Trying to rewrite the story of A Friend Like Simon from Simon's perspective. Talk about how Simon felt on his first day of school, how he feels when his routines are disrupted, and the thoughts that go through his head while he is feeling overstimulated. Students will create a digital collage of photos on Google Slides. They will search the internet for pictures of students that are all different, like the students that we have seen and read about in these books. Students will make a collage of what an inclusive and diverse classroom looks like to them and we will share them with the class.

The class will record a “Welcome to Room ___” video where each student will list a reason why they are an accepting and empathic person. The video can be used to show to any new students or substitute teachers.
