911 dispatchers answer 911 calls from people in a state of emergency and take the information from the caller and dispatch the appropriate team(police, EMT, firefighters, etc) to the address of the emergency. Being a 911 operator is a stressful job and requires a calm and patient person to answer the calls.

911 dispatchers must have the education and training to gather information and fully assess and emergency situation. Then, they must be able to dispatch the emergency team to the address of the emergency. They must also know how to give pre-arrival instructions to the caller that may include life-saving medical instructions. Although the 911 system is overseen by the National 911 Office, some requirements in states and counties may differ from one another. However, before one becomes a 911 dispatcher they must obtain a college degree in either public safety, emergency management, homeland security, etc. The training of being a 911 operator consists of 40 hours of training and anywhere from 6-18 months of on the job training. 911 dispatchers must also have a CPR certification through the National Safety Council, American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Being a 911 operator does not interest me that much due to the fact that I would be sitting a lot at a desk answering 911 calls. I also and horrible at the computer even though I grew up in the age of technology. I would like to be more hands on with people and help them physically, not verbally. However, I see the importance of 911 operators and hope other individuals fill the forever need of them.
