Winston Smith:
- 39 years old
- has a ulcer above his right ankle
- has a smallish frail figure
- has fair hair
- paranoid
- does not remember much from his childhood
- his apperance is revealed by himself looking at his reflection
- we can hear his inner thoughts and paranoia about his surroundings
- kinda misogynistic, especially how he talks down about women and keeps calling them Mrs. when he's supposed to call all people comrades, and even makes excuses for himself for this
- has no friends??????
- Orwell characterizes Winston as a complete, sympathetic human being, and in doing so gives the reader a stake in the outcome of the novel. Because Winston is so real, so common, it is easy for readers to identify with him and to imagine themselves in his place.

Mrs. Parsons:
- Stressed out
- Introduced when she knocks on Winston's door to get help with the kitchen sink
- Talks about her husband A LOT
- Afraid of her insane kids (understandable)

Mr. Parsons (Tom?)
- Suspicious of Winston?
- Introduced when Winston eats lunch one day
- Proud of his insane kids, and even talking about all the insane things they've done proudly in front of Winston

Syme
- Dislikes Winston but still talks with him, a lot
- Very smart, maybe too smart for his own good
- Does not shut up, ever
- Introduced when he eats lunch with Winston
- Is also a bit insane, especially how he talks about hangings and murders
- Is kind of one the same page as Tom but is still not as bad (I think)

Mrs. and Mr. Parsons kids
- Abseloutly insane
- They've gotten innocent people killed
- Act like they're on top of the world and looking for spies
- The son hit Winston in the neck

Julia
- 26 years old
- Winston's love interest
- used to live in a hostel
- has had sex with a lot of party members

O'brien:
- antagonist in the book
- works in the ministry of truth
- inner party member
- Winston trusts him at first because he thinks that O'brien opposes the party, just like himself
- is actually a part of the thought police
- 48-50 years old
-
Goldstein;
- figure for "brotherhood", opposition to big brother
- does not really exist, more of propaganda

1.What is the narrative point of view?

- third person, Limited Omniscient Point of View ; we as readers get to know the main characters feelings and thoughts, but we do not read the thoughts of the other characters. It makes it more personal and more "up close" with the main character, which could have been different if the narrative was more closed off. If the story was written in first-person, it would have felt like we as readers are the main character.

2.How is the setting established? Comment on the language.
- The book is set in Oceania which we get to know by the footnote saying the language spoken is from Ocenia. The book is set in 1984 in Oceania, one of three perpetually warring totalitarian states (the other two are Eurasia and Eastasia). Oceania is governed by the all-controlling Party, which has brainwashed the population into unthinking obedience to its leader, Big Brother. The novel is set in and around London, which is the main city of Airstrip One, a province of the country of Oceania. (newspeak) The idea behind Newspeak is that, as language must become less expressive, the mind is more easily controlled. Through his creation and explanation of Newspeak, Orwell warns the reader that a government that creates the language and mandates how it is used can control the minds of its citizens.

What type of tone is created? How does the writer create this tone? How might it affect the reader?

- The main character is very upfront and honest, and therefore the tone is more confrontational and serious. The main character is not happy and he feels the need to express it.

What is the mood of the story?

- The mood is on the heavier side, and we feel suspensful already in the twenty first chapters when Winston's door gets knocked on while he writes in his diary. Immediately in the start of the book, the author depicts a society in decay by describing a setting of "gritty dust," "hallways [smelling] of boiled cabbage and old rag mats," elevators (the lift) not working, and electrical current that is turned off during daylight hours.
