While 68 indigenous languages may seem like a lot, over 130 indigenous languages along with their unique customs and cultural values, have vanished. The Law of Linguistic Rights was created in 2002 to protect the native Mexican languages and encourage bilingual and intercultural education. Some of the mostly spoken languages in Mexico, besides Spanish, are Nahuatl which has almost 1.4 million speakers, Yucatec Maya spoken by over three quarters of a million people, and Mixtec whose speakers amount to about half a million.

Mexico’s population is composed of many ethnic groups, including American Indians, who account for nearly one-fifth of the total, and Mexicans of European heritage, who are between between one-tenth and one-fifth of the total population. Generally speaking, the mixture of indigenous and European people have produced the largest segment of the population today—mestizos, who account for between one-half and two-thirds of the total population — a complex blending of ethnic traditions and perceived ancestry.

Catholic Christianity is the dominant religion in Mexico, representing about 83% of the total population. Many Mexicans see Catholicism as part of their identity, passed on through the family like cultural heritage. Although not all Mexicans go to church regularly. It is most visible in festivities and events. While approximately 5% of the population is thought to be unaffiliated with any religion, many non-religious Mexicans still are part of Catholic celebrations.

The "Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe", which is celebrated on Dec. 12, is a major Mexican holiday celebrating the appearance of the Virgin Mary to an Indian man in the first years of Spanish ruling. She is the patron saint of the country and is followed closely by Posadas which is a nine-day celebration in which people reenact Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem to search for shelter. Families go from door to door carrying candles and singing and asking for shelter until the owners open the door, at which point the party begins.
