1. Using the Thinking Routine, "I used to think _______, now I think ______" for 2 videos
A. Managing stress for safety : I used to think I was managing stress by just completing the task by deadline, now I think taking moments to re-access how I am feeling is better management.
B. Conscious vs Subconscious thinking: I used to think I made conscious decisions on almost all aspects of creativity now I think with the practice I have done creating there are moments where I subconsciously make choices that appear in my work.

2. Research:
A. PRIMITIVE : the brain stem, limbic region and the amygdala. This instinctive part of the brain is well developed from birth and is responsible for:

Basic functioning – breathing, blinking, heart beating, flinching, digestion etc.

Innate responses – fight, flight, freeze and flop.

Producing strong emotions such as anger and fear.

B. FEELING : Three brain structures appear most closely linked with emotions: the amygdala, the insula or insular cortex, and a structure in the midbrain called the periaqueductal gray. A paired, almond-shaped structure deep within the brain, the amygdala integrates emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation.

C. THINKING : The frontal lobe is primarily responsible for thinking, planning, memory, and judgment. The parietal lobe is primarily responsible for bodily sensations and touch. The temporal lobe is primarily responsible for hearing and language.

4. I think knowing this helps with SEL because it can help us recognize if someone is actively trying to feel a certain way or if its passive and subconsciously done.

I used to think that all emotions were regulated by a specific part of the brain, now I think there are certain levels of emotions that live in certain parts of the brain that help us make the most informed decision possible based on the perceived problem.

Create summary sentences on the 2 videos you watched.

How the Brain Works: The brain uses about 20% of the body’s energy and creates 10-25 Watts of power to help keep us alive and help us with simple and complex goals/tasks.

Limitations of the Brain: Our body functions as a giant sensor through our 5 senses (touch, taste, smell, hear, sight) that help feed information to the brain to make decisions that help navigate our complex environment.

Do a little research. Which parts of the brain are known as the primitive, feeling, and thinking parts?

The basis for the Primitive, Feeling, and Thinking brain (3 brains model) seems to come from neuroscientist Paul MacLean in his ‘Triune Brain” model. I’m not a brain expert, but I believe this is how they translate based on the Triune model, and medical terms.

Medulla Oblongata - Reptilian Brain - Primitive

Amygdala - Limbic System - Feeling

Cerebral Cortex (Neocortex) - Thinking

What does each of these parts of the brain do?

Primitive - Breathing, heartbeat, and coordinating our movements balance/posture. It scans our environment to search for threats.

Feeling - Emotional and Social experience through life. Emotions and impulses come from this region and are activated when the primitive part triggers the fight or flight response. It helps us create memories from strong feelings.

Thinking - most extensive and most developed. Stores memory, plays, imagine/analyze, finds solutions, and communicates with others. We can take control of decision-making and choices. Gives us our likes, dislikes, hopes, and ambitions. It’s what makes us different from all other animals on this planet.

How does knowing this information help and inform our SEL work?

I think the 3 brains model (Primitive, Feeling, Thinking) helps us interpret that some students are not able to perform emotionally challenging work because they have yet to feel safe (primitive), have been conditioned to avoid the work of SEL (feeling), or have not had sufficient opportunities to practice building stronger neuropathways that help us control/regulate our response to perceived danger.

I do various Crossfit movements such as cleans, snatches, front squats, back squats, and deadlifts among other things. The process was very slow and challenging. Many times I wanted to quit because it felt overwhelming. If you recorded me doing the movements, you probably would see me stretching and warming up and then sweating and struggling to breathe at times. If I was explicit with a particular movement, I would start with a front squat by placing your feet about hip with apart and finding your comfortable squat position, rest the bar on your front rack, you may feel slightly uncomfortable by keeping the bar where its very close to your throat, keep your elbows high, look straight forward at all times, brace your core and drop into your squat, and exhale on the way up.

I have learned power lifting over the years starting in 7th grade . The focus is lifting heavy weights with good forms such as squat , bench, deadlift, hang cleans. I have learned from great coaches along the way from high school and college. If you were going to record me learning through the years when I first started, I was more focused on the correct form and progressions to mastering the form and gradually adding weights as the years went on.

When teaching this to my athletes I start with no bar, then to bar, then to adding only 5 pounds on each side and etc until I feel comfortable enough for them to add weight gradually. I use a lot of key terminology for kids to remember when doing the lifts.

Briefly describe to your partner a situation you have found yourself in at school where there was some type of dispute or disagreement. (i.e., with a studentover a grade, with a parent, over a perceived comment that was made, etc.) Your partner determines which elements of active listening were used.

Emotional labeling: By identifying a person’s emotions, they feel validated and heard, not minimized. People often act with emotions rather than from a more cognitive perspective. By labeling and acknowledging emotions, it helps to restore balance.

Paraphrasing: Includes repeating what a person has said in your own words in a much shorter format while also making sure not to minimize what the person has experienced.

Reflecting and mirroring: When someone is finished speaking, reflecting and mirroring is a shorter option compared to paraphrasing. It includes repeating the last words the person said. For example, If the person ends a conversation by saying, “…and this really made me angry,” you could say, “It really made you angry.”

Effective pauses and silence: Part of listening includes pausing or being silent before taking your turn to speak. Also known as dynamic inactivity, silence allows the other person to continue speaking while also pausing prior to help calm a situation. Calming the situation is essential as it can move the person from reacting based on emotion to a more rational, cognitive space.

“I” messages: Counteract statements made by the person that serve as obstacles to collaboration. Active listening (AL) statements include: “I feel___ when you ___ because ___.” AL provides a “timeout” by letting the other person know you are trying to work together. It is important to be mindful of your tone to ensure that it is not perceived as aggressive or argumentative.

Open-ended questions: Asking open-ended questions provides opportunities for the person to speak longer and thus can help diffuse tension and provide valuable information, insight and perspective of the situation.

Minimal encouragers: Simple verbal actions such as “mmm,” “okay,” and “I see,” and nonverbal gestures such as head nodding establish the building of rapport with the person by subtly inviting the person to continue speaking.

Summarize: An extended version of paraphrasing, summarizing identifies everything the person has said including the elements important to the person. It acknowledges the person’s emotions. Summarizing provides validation for the person who has now been heard and understood. It is important to summarize as it can bring a sense of relief and reduce reactions that are dictated by emotions.

Years ago, I fell in love with growing herbs and peppers: it was out of simple boredom. Living in Vegas around 2008, I thought it would be fun to plant Thai Basil because it could take the heat. It grew so well that I planted more herbs.

Barring a 4 year interruption in Seoul, I'm back to growing many herbs and peppers in my garden. The photos here are from this week.

I learned to do it the following way:

Decide what you want to plant.

Check prices and availability of those plants.

Go buy them.

Go to Moon Valley Nursery (*It's where professional landscapers go) and buy a bag of Moon Dust.

Get Vivosun Grow bags

Grow bags aerate the plants better than traditional pots and can be watered also.

Put in your potting soil

Dig a hole and put about 1/2 cup of the Moon Dust in the roots of the plant.

Plant your pre-grown herb, pepper, or flower.

Fill it in.

Water and watch it explode with growth over the coming weeks.

Tell everyone you know what you're doing.

This has helped me grow so many herbs and veggies.

This picture represents two skills I taught myself. I describe the wood carving.

How did I learn to do it so well?

I visualized and I practiced. I also studied carvings by other people.

Span of learning:

I learned to carve over approximately 10 years. I progressed over time and had to practice a lot. My goal was to create something cute that I could sell. To sell the dolls I learned how to photograph so I could post stories and pictures to create interest.

Step by step guide:

You have to think of the doll as a three dimensional round product. One early mistake is that people don't round the edges as much as they should and you end with a square head.

It is also important to keep in mind that you have to remove wood to find the head of the doll. So it is a process of taking away what is there.

I studied heads and faces from different angles and worked on proportion.

My focus when carving the faces was the angles. I made a ridge for the eyes and then carved wood away from the nose to form the nose.

Before beginning to carve, I would visualize what I wanted to produce before starting to carve.

I had a neighbor lady teach me.

At 8, I started to compete in rodeo- barrels and timed events.

At 9, my dad decided I needed to learn to rope, so I got a rope. Learned how to swing it without capturing myself and practiced on a calf head dummy on the ground.

Shortly thereafter, I learned how to rope from a horse- calves only. Every morning I still had to throw the rope 100 times before school.

In middle school, I went to work with a private instructor for a week who improved my breakaway roping and then he taught me to team rope.

Continued to practice multiple days a week and competed every weekend from early spring to late fall through my senior year of high school.

Step by Step: Hold the rope measuring it proportionally against your body (loop from ground to arm pit, slack from armpit of left arm to outstretched right arm, and there needs to be an arm's length from the knot to the place you hold it). Get arm up and swing. Throw the rope like a baseball at the back of the head. Depending on the target- your swing changes. More dip in the calf and more across for a steer. From the horse, you have to back in, nod for the chute to open, start swinging, and throw when you can!

Start to balance on your head as you slowly remove one leg from the wall. eventually you'll be able to remove both legs and balance on your head. 7. once your balance and strength are there, practice this without the wall

So practice, practice, practice with lots of feedback.

My waistband expanding, sticky fingers, and many happy kids.

Build a fire and let it burn until you have some bright red embers. Pick out a 2-3 foot roasting stick. Place the marshmallow on the stick so that the stick pierces the bottom of the marshmallow (as opposed to the side). Hover the marshmallow approximately 1 foot above the red embers, but not directly in any flame. Continue rotating the stick so that one side of the marshmallow is never exposed to the ember too long. Watch your marshmallow closely. If it begins smoking, turn it. When the marshmallow turns a golden color on all sides, it is ready. If it catches fire or any section turns black, try again with another marshmallow. Expert Level: Add to a graham cracker with a Reeces cup.

Baking / Cookie Decorating

I've been baking ever since I can remember. It started as a holiday tradition with all the women on my mom's side of the family, and then since moving to AZ and needing something to keep busy during COVID (with inspiration from Holiday Baking Championship), I started practicing.

The first few sets of cookies I did looked VERY different from the ones I do now. At the time, I thought they were great, but looking back, I can definitely see the progress. I'm still learning new techniques and more advanced tools to elevate the craft.

I do teach Cookie decorating classes for birthdays and other parties. I typically come with the cookies and icing already made (because that's a whole other level of knowledge), but then I teach people in the class step by step how to decorate each cookie.

Flooding Technique

1. Cut the icing bag with a very small hole (you can always cut it bigger if needed), with the bag's seam facing up.

2. Gently squeeze a drop of icing out of the bag and touch down onto the cookie. While keeping a steady stream of pressure, lift the bag up just slightly from the cookie, letting the stream of icing fall into an outline.

3. Once the cookie is outlined, use slightly more pressure to work in circles going from the outside to the inside of the cookie, flooding the full cookie with icing.

4. Use the scribe tool to push icing to the edges or fill in any gaps or uneven areas

I started playing in 7th grade and continued playing into college and still play occasionally for a community orchestra. To get better at it I first would practice at home and in school. I eventually found a teacher who was able to push me and help me with some of my errors. Choose harder songs and compete in our states solo and ensemble competition getting feedback from the judges and then implementing that feedback into my playing.

If you recorded me, you would see a lot of growth and frustration. You would see me struggle with broken reeds, tricky runs, and broken pads. You would also see pride as I nailed the solos and other performances when I was stressed I couldn't.

Step-by-step instrutions

Start with your instrument and a reed that is soft.

Learn your embouchure. Try just making noise on it without worrying about the notes or keys you are playing

Pick an easy piece you want to learn (or were given) and learn the fingerings needed for that piece. It is helpful to learn the scale for the key signature of that piece and practice your scales.

Keep practicing until you feel like you can't get it wrong.

Perform the piece

Select a new piece that is different in some way. (Different key signature, time signature, style) that will help you grow

Keep having fun!

I enjoy cooking and I am pretty dang on good at it.

I learned to cook well by cooking with my grandmother and mother at a young age. Then being allowed to cook with other family members throughout the year for various occasions.

In my crystal ball you would see me at several friends and family gatherings offering up ideas to spice up dishes. Whether it would be adding authentic spices and roux, or supplementing techniques without all the needed ingredients.

I would teach this cooking by watching videos, sampling various ingredients, reading various recipes, discovering proper cooking tools and safety tips, and tasting dishes prior to final production for palate satisfaction.
