This lesson plan has students read the book "Don't Call Me Special." Before the kids read the book they will look at the title and pictures in the book and then they will be asked to make a prediction about what they think the book is about. Then they will be asked to describe the pictures and how they think the children are feeling. After they read the book the teacher will have them answer questions. For an activity the students will be asked to think of one way to be kind to another child in the classroom. They will write these things one a piece of paper and put it in a jar. Each student will choose a piece of paper and has to do whats on that paper for another student in the class by the end of the week.

This lesson plan has worksheets for students in 1st and 2nd grade. These worksheets introduce the term disability to young children and helps them understand that disabilities can result from an accident or illness. It also has a list of activities that teachers can have their students do. One activity is asking the students if they know anyone who cannot use all of their body parts? Then ask the students how those people are similar to them.

One activity that I liked was having a student in your class that speaks a different language stand in front of the class and say one sentence in their language then have the class try to decide what was said. After, the teacher will ask how the students felt not being able to understand something, how quickly the class gave up, what are some other ways to communicate, and how is this similar to people with disabilities.
