There are possible advantages and disadvantages of appointing a European Union Minister of Finance. The unity of the EU and the sovereignty of its member states are at risk, even though it would enhance economic coordination. Smaller countries may feel ignored, and states like France and Germany may be reluctant to give up fiscal power out of concern that the policies will not meet their economic demands. Politically, the plan would widen rifts and worsen the EU's "democratic deficit," preventing citizens from participating in important choices.

A new role would be ineffective because fiscal problems are already supervised by established institutions such as the European Stability Mechanism, European Central Bank, and Stability and Growth Pact. Furthermore, there would be major legal and political obstacles to establishing such a function, including treaty changes.
