Developing a leadership mindset has been in my mind from my early childhood. This leadership course has in so many ways influenced my understanding of what a good leader should be. Now I am aware that a good leader should develop a good leadership vision from the start. The vision should start off as a journey, it includes where you are at the time, where you plan to go to, the road map to get to that destination, and the different ways you can overcome obstacles on you way. In order words the leader’s utmost concern is achieving set goals. As I went through the course work the two striking leadership qualities that resonates with me are servant leadership and emotional intelligence.

1. Greenleaf Model
According to Daft (p.178) Robert Greenleaf’s model talks about the four basic precepts to becoming a servant leader:

1. Putting service before self interest

2. Listen first to affirm others

3. Inspire trust by being trustworthy

4. Nourish others and help them become whole

These steps will be in an instrumental part of my growth to become a servant leader because it will teach me about putting others first which is a very hard thing for me to do because I am so used to only thinking about my interests, listening to what others have to say without judgment or harsh criticisms, building trust with people by being honest and focusing on the well being of others and helping people to become their best selves.

2. Mentorship
As a leader I think that it is important for you to mentor people and have mentors as well. Since I am not yet a servant leader, I think for me to become one I will have to surround myself with people who are servant leaders. I will achieve this by going to workshops or getting into a mentorship programs that will boost my confidence as well as create great partnerships. I will also read books about servant leaders and have role models like Martin Luther king and Michelle Obama who in my opinion are great servant leaders. Once I have learnt about being a good servant leader I would be able to mentor others and give them the guidance on how to become a servant leader themselves.

Goal 1: Servant Leader

My first leadership goal that I want to attain is to become a servant leader. I do not consider myself as a servant leader, but I want to learn this skill. This is a goal that I want to pursue because I want to be a leader who helps, motivates and allows people grow in their field. I want to be a coach for my employees, someone that they trust, and they know will have their backs always.

My second goal that I want to achieve is to be more emotionally intelligent. As a leader I believe that I should be able to identify, understand and manage my emotions as well as others. According to Daft “An important ability for leaders is to understand the range of emotions people have and how these emotions may manifest themselves” (p.146) I also want to build my relationship management skills because it will be beneficial to my career.

1. Be Self Aware
This is a step that is important for me. I am not the best at reading people’s emotions or mine and it has affected me in my work life. One of the ways I want to be more self aware is by being fluent in the language of emotions. In order for me to know how to communicate better about how I feel I should first understand the feeling and the effect it may have on the situation at hand. According to Six Seconds (para. 2) I should be able to name emotions really specifically and differentiate between similar emotions, so that I don’t mix them up.

2. Build my Relationship management skills

As a leader I want to be able to build positive relationships with the people I work with. I will build relationships with people by being open with them, having an inviting presence and being free with the people I work with. I want to earn the respect of my team and I can only do that by being honest and trying to create a bond with them.. According to Daft (2018) leaders use their understand of emotions to change and lead people to do better, build teamwork and resolve conflicts that may arise. (p. 151)
