The name Bras Basah came from beras basah, which means “wet rice” in Malay. Boats used to carry sacks of rice would unload and dry them along the banks of Sungei Brass Bassa (now Stamford Canal), and the rice would often get wet by the rising tides.

Bras Basah district was marked out by Sir Stamford Raffles as the European part of Singapore Town. It was a busy city centre which wrapped itself around Raffles Place. Due to its central location, the Bras Basah area was considered an ideal location for the establishment of schools and places of worship to the ever-growing multicultural communities that have sprung up along with the development of Singapore.
