Their "American Dream" was to escape poverty and have religious freedom.
Puritan Religious Life.  God had formed a unique covenant, or agreement, with them. They believed that God expected them to live according to the Scriptures, to reform the Anglican Church, and to set a good example that would cause those who had remained in England to change their sinful ways.
Puritan thought that was introduced to the New World in the 1600s exerted not just religious influence on the people in the new settlement, but political, economic and social influence. Puritanism stressed on “believing in the absolute sovereignty of God, the total depravity of man, and the complete dependence of human beings on divine grace for salvation and also the importance of personal religious experience.

The most important idea of the Enlightenment was the belief that all people can think for themselves. A person should not automatically believe in what an authority claims. People do not even have to believe what the church teaches or what the priets preach. 

During the time of the Enlightenment, more people began to disagree with the idea that God created the world. This brought on conflicts and later war. The Enlightenment is held to be the source of important ideas, such as the centrality of freedom and democracy. 
This led to the American Revolution, and the creation of the American Republic.
