Although trees may seem like silent, independent organisms, they form a network buzzing with life: they talk, share food, raise their young, and offer protection. Trees thrive on diversity, learn from their ancestors, and give back to their communities. Trees not only sustain life on our planet--they can also teach us important lessons about patience, survival, and teamwork.

Learn More

Read-Alikes:

111 Trees by Rina Singh

The Curious Garden by Peter Brown

Listen to the Language of the Trees: A story of how forests communicate underground Hardcover by Tera Kelley

©2022

Dewey Decimal #: 582.16

Synopsis: Readers will discover that trees have their own social network, and helping one another thrive is trending. The fascinating mycorrhizal fungi network runs underground through the forest via the roots of trees, allowing for connection and communication. Listen to the Language of the Trees captures the magic of talking trees that take care of their neighbors (not to mention the mysterious fungi that help them do it). A lyrical read aloud, Listen to the Language of the Trees is the story of a seedling, newly sprouted at the base of a giant tree. As it stretches its roots into an underground web of fungi, it learns that its fellow trees use the fungi to pass messages and share resources! It will take great luck for this tiny seedling to survive, but it will have help from its friends in the forest. The Douglas fir forest also harbors creatures like a zany Yellow Pine chipmunk gathering and forgetting seed cones, an owl nested in the giant tree, and chattering Steller's jays. And, as we must never forget, no part of the forest is entirely free from danger!

Learn More

Read-Alikes:

The Language of Plants by Helena Harastova

Friends in Nature by Marina Ruiz

This collection of nonfiction childrens' books about trees is for students in an elementary school library, particularly grades 2 through 4. This collection aims to appeal to this age group due to the Tennessee State Science Standards in grades 2 and 4 that deal with the topic of trees (2.LS2: Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics & 4.ESS2: Earth’s Systems). Hopefully this collection will relate to what these students are learning in class and encourage them to further explore the subject of trees. Selecting books for this collection was fairly straight-forward, as there are several renowned and some award-winning tree books for children. I also sought counsel from the Childrens' Librarian at my public library who shared several quality titles that she deems of value and sees circulate frequently. As I dove into my research, I decided to identify my 3 categorical subtopics: types of trees, trees can talk?!, and how do trees work?. This allowed me to organize my collection and break it down into browsable sections. Types of Trees includes titles on specific varieties of trees and/or books that primarily focus on the identification of different trees. Trees Can Talk?! focuses in on the subtopic of how trees communicate with one another via root systems. How Do Trees Work? contains titles that focus on the inner workings, growth, development, and life cycles of trees.

I aim to become an Elementary School Librarian in Tennessee, and so could absolutely see myself using this collection in my own library to support the curriculum. I could also recommend the collection to my colleagues and support the 2nd and/or 4th grade teachers in my school with suggestions from this collection. This collection would also aid the development of my school library collection by providing titles I should purchase to match the curriculum. I think I will create virtual collections like this often in my future career to support teachers, match student interest, and promote titles for circulation.
