Witch Trial Origins

The Salem Witch Trials started when Rev. George Burrough's slave, Tituba, started talking to his 9 year old daughter, Elizabeth, and her 11 year old cousin, Abigail Williams, who were left behind in the kitchen with Tituba. Tituba told the girls stories and did magic tricks. This influenced the girls whose behaviors changed as time went one. In addition, more girls started to join the group. The cause for this was of teenage boredom and foreigners who had strange rituals and beliefs. When Dr. William Griggs examined the girls for this behavior, he declared that the girls were under witchcraft. Puritans believed in Satan who hired women to become witches and do his deeds. The girls started to call out other people for being witches and working for the devil. Trials started to begin for witches and all sorts of practices were used. Some of these were piercing their bodies to find the witches mark, torturing them until they confess, and sentencing them guilty though there was little evidence. At the end of it all, 19 people were hanged, 4 died in prison, and 1 man was pressed to death.

Puritan Beliefs

The Puritans had many beliefs in their time, but there are some more notable ones that they incorporated into the new one. One of the puritans' beliefs were "A City Upon A Hill". This is the idea that they would make a utopian city that would be all based on God. God would be king in the city and the puritans would follow his orders. Another belief of the puritans was Total Depravity. Total Depravity was the belief that everyone is a sinner immediately after they were born. In addition, another belief is Predestination. Predestination is the belief that you are already selected to either go to heaven or hell. Where you go cannot be changed or altered. One last belief of the puritans was Grace. If you were selected to go to heaven, god would give you a sign which is what the puritans called the "Grace of God".

The Puritans originated from England, where a religious movement was taking place at the time. The puritans wanted to convert the church from catholic and make things more simpler. But, the church didn't accept them. So, the puritans traveled to America to start a new life and be away from the church. They took a small ship named the Mayflower with a small amount of puritans in it.

Trying to Live On The Land

When the puritans first settled on Plymouth Massachusetts, they were able to get somewhat settled before winter came. The winter caused a whole lot of problems for the puritans. Lots of people got sick and had to be housed on the Mayflower ship. This resulted in less houses being built in the winter due to the less amount of people able to work. In addition, they had trouble finding food and supplies to help too. When winter ended, they gained some help from the Native Americans who taught them how to live off the land and survive.

The Downfall of the Puritan Utopia

In the end, Puritanism did not succeed in the new world. People wanted to do other things instead of spreading the word of God. Also, people become selfish and wanted to do things more for themselves. They also wanted to make money and live out their lives. This resulted in the steady decline of puritanism and the fall of what was supposed to be the new world.

The background to the crucible is very interesting for me. I think that the book will be fun to read and enjoy. The thought of witnessing the witch trials in the book is a bit saddening, but mostly interesting. Reading about the experiences of the people of Salem during this time in the book sounds exciting and fun. To add on, hearing about the different tales and myths that they will tell as well will amusing.
