Each island across Hawaii holds a tremendous amount of volcanoes. In fact the islands are one giant volcano. Over the course of years as the Pacific plate moves over the hot spot volcano eruptions build up layers creating islands, and the islands continue to grow after more eruptions over millions of years. Along with the tallest mountain in the world they also hold the record for the biggest volcano Mauna Loa standing 13674 feet tall.

Today there are only 6 of the 15 volcanoes active currently. Since 1912, there have been 63 eruptions, 50 of those coming from Mount Kilauea. Even with the amount of eruptions that happen frequently over the islands they usually cause little harm as they are not usually explosive and produce a flow of lava flowing down creating a hard black magma over the island. In this photo you can see Kilauea spewing lava. This is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It is active now and has been erupting on and off since December 23, 2024.

Hawaii follows a very traditional lifestyle. Hawaiians start their traditions very early. As soon as you are born they cut off your umbilical cord and bury them in the sand along with a tree seedling. They do this because it shows a connection between that new person and their parents. Along with the amount of traditions, another big part of life is surfing. If you go down to the beaches you will see groups of people of all different ages floating around on a surf board. Waves can be 14-17 feet the biggest ever recorded at 60 feet in 1998! They enjoy surfing so much because it has been practiced for centuries in Hawaii. It is also known as the "sport of kings''. For them surfing is more than a sport or hobby. It creates a spiritual connection between the ocean and the gods.Surfing is not the only thing they do in the water. Fishing is a very important part of their culture. Catching a Marlin in Hawaii is a huge honor and a very hard challenge to accomplish

Along with the mountains Hawaii is home to numerous amazing waterfalls. Just on the island of Kauai alone, there are nearly 10,000 waterfalls. The most breathtaking of which is “Waipuhia Falls” and is located on the island of Oahu. It’s a reverse waterfall where the winds are so strong the water flows upwards. Most waterfalls are surrounded by beautiful rain forests making them popular hiking destinations. The waterfalls also mean more than water, as most are tied back to local legends and traditions. For example, located on the Big Island, the legend revolves around rainbow falls. The legend says Hina, the mother of the demigod Maui, lived in a cave behind the falls. It is said when you see a rainbow in the mist of the water, it is Hina’s presence blessing the area with her spirt.
