Marj indulged herself  in many books, all which had sad but true stories of people going through hardships.  
She feels guilty as she starts realizing the privilege she has. She is angry at the injustices happening around her, finally understanding the reasons for the revolution, and feeling perhaps in some way that she contributes to it. 

Author's choices:
The author uses body language and facial expressions to convey how Marj feels guilty about her privileges. She is shown in the Cadillac with her head down and eyes sad, clasping her hands together in a way that she is almost holding herself, showing how she is ashamed of her new realization. The thought bubbles in the last panel also show how this is an aha moment for her, sparking the revolution inside herself.

After the Shah’s abuse of power, and negligence to the people’s needs. They continuously fought against him, wanting to push him out and the triumphant day finally came. The Shah left and was banished. This panel shows the celebratory day and how joyous the people were at this milestone. 

Author's Choices:

The author shows the depth of their happiness, with the plethora of people across the panel. Each one of them with a smiling face, varying on intensity. Some look like they’re screaming with joy, hands up cheering, going wild, seemingly rejoiced. Some just simply smiling but, nevertheless, they are very clearly euphoric and celebrating this accomplishment. This panel being a splash also illustrates the significance of the event. Having it stand alone gives the impression that it’s important and something that is worth paying attention to. It tells me that it’s a major event in Iranian history.

There is an atmosphere of gloom and anguish. All the bodies on the ground are from the “Black Friday” massacre. Marji’s mother finds Mehri and Marji and slaps them for participating in a protest on the day so many were massacred. The intense suffering that took place is focused on in this atmosphere. 

Author's Choices:
The bodies are all colored in black with white lines outlining their figures, which is a lot of graphic weight that shows the impact of the massacre. The bodies also bleed off the page in a giant pile overlapping each other, making them seem like dead animals slaughtered in a heap. The angle shows only Marji and her uncle’s hand. The panel depicts him waking up from the dream in a cold sweat in the dark.

The author uses dramatic contrast to evoke the dark, isolating atmosphere. Everything is dark save for a few highlights outlining Anoosh, which emphasizes that it’s in the middle of the night and that he is alone. Additionally, the author used emanata to show that Anoosh is in a state of fear. There is sweat around his head, showing that he woke up sweating - which is oftentimes a side effect of intense fear and anxiety. The body language, with him sitting straight up and arms flung back, implies that he just woke up, immediately sitting straight up in shock. Lastly, his wide eyed and worried facial expression indicates his distress and fear. In this panel, it is clear that the descriptions of the events from the panel above have taken a large toll on the innocent mind of Marji. She cannot believe such a simple household item can be used to create such harm. 

Author's Choices: We know the panel conveys this atmosphere because of composition, body language, and facial expressions. The panel is organized in a way that separates Marji from the iron, they are at a large distance from each other. It creates the sense that Marji is afraid to be near it. Her fear and disturbance is also portrayed through her stance, her back is facing it, yet her head is turned to look at it, not wanting to face it completely. Her face is visibly distraught: she wears a frown, while her eyes widen as she stares at it.

The atmosphere here is one of carelessness and ignorance. Marji carelessly speaks without giving it a second thought to how Laly would feel to even think about the possibility if her father could be dead. SHe only wanted to fill her in to lies that she's being told but she did it in an incorrect manner that made the situation worse.

I know this atmosphere exists here because we have marji in a normal speaking tone, not with a concerned face on a simply straight face as if this isn't an important conversation at all. Then she’s just standing there while Laly runs away cause she still doesn't even understand what she could have said wrong. Then there’s Laly running away cause this information is shocking itself like you think your father is somewhere alive and well but there’s a possibility he is dead.

Mehi’s sister was jealous of her relationship with the next door neighbor, so she told (gossiped, spilled the beans, split the tea, etc) Marjane’s uncle who told Grandma, who told Marjane’s Mom, who lastly told Marjane’s Dad.

Author's Choices: 
  • The body language of the characters. They are all whispering to each other with a look of disapproval and disdain. 
    • The father’s face, however, is surprised. 
    • Mehi’s sister face shows jealousy
    • Marjane’s family member’s faces show disapproval and slight disgust. Which is shown in their arched eyebrows. 
  • Marjane’s pearl necklace kind of hints what might be the problem with this “relationship”, because pearls are a sign of wealth & the high class.

All the people are pushing the king and they seem very famished and ghoul-like. They seem exhausted, crushed, and drained pushing the Shah forwards. Its a very depressing setting for the people, while the shah is depicted differently and looks kind of annoyed they are losing strength.

Authors choices: The author depicts these people as the citizens of Iran which bleeds off to the left. Pushing the Shah’s selfish ideology forward they are suffering themselves. A good ruler would push his people, not be pushed by them. It also says the end of his reign is near, like his people have been pushed long enough where his followers start to die out. Which is just the grim truth about what's happening. This panel shows the aftermath of Marjane hearing about these stories of imprisonment and making child-like games out of them, and playing these games with her friends. She later goes home to contemplate what she had done. I would say the atmosphere between these two panels are anxious and cynical because she is shown as being such and then crying directly after it. 

Author's Choice:

The in these two panels shows marjane looking herself in a mirror, and the mirror shows Marjane as a devil like figure which indicates what she had done was evil or cynical.The facial expressions on the evil version on Marjane's face looks not only like a devil, but like its trying to scare her away from something, maybe these really heavy topics that have been mentioned throughout the book so far. On the second  panel we see Marjane crying with a caption that says “ But it didn’t last, I was overwhelmed”, Marjane  was overwhelmed and anxious at the fact that she had felt such a diabolical feeling if power , a similar  feeling power that leaders like the shah had during his reign which is most likely what scared her so much.The author shows Marjane crying her eyes out with her arms crossed, this type of body language indicates that Marjane  is almost disgusted by the way she felt and how she acted.

At the bottom of page 59 you can see Marji talking to uncle Anoosh about his wife and why she's scribbled out of a picture. And you can see Marji is confused by what he says. I would say these panels have an ominous/ gloomy atmosphere.

Authors choices

You can tell there is an ominous atmosphere in these panels cause we see once Marji asks him why his wife is scratched out he turns away from and stops looking at her. That kind of body language shows that he is holding back from telling her something. And his answer to her question says “it's hearts they don't have. They don't know how to love”. This answer is ominous because you can assume something bad happened but he wont outright say what it was, and you can see Marji's reaction was confusion. 

I also said gloomy because you can see the heavy graphic weight in the background of these panels which goes with the dark topic being talked about. On the last panel you can see tears start to form in his eyes which further adds to the gloomy atmosphere.

There is an atmosphere of chaos, helplessness and despair.  In this panel Marji is imagining the torture of a man named ahmadi, a member of the Guerillas who was captured.  The panel showcases different methods of torture including being whipped, peed on, and burned by an iron.  

Authors choices:
We know the panel conveys this atmosphere because of the artistic choices like facial expression, text bubble format, and the context itself. While he is being whipped and burned, his face is anguished, he is visibly in great pain.  His body language is hopeless and defeated when he is being peed on by the interrogator, his head is hanging down with a frown.  The text bubbles are harsh and violent from the interrogator, putting us in the place of the man.  We really can feel the chaotic atmosphere.

  • The dialogue really shows the frustration the people feel, because it's almost like the guy wants them to do it faster/they want it to be done already. 
  • Also, the crowd is focused on the statue; they're focused on getting the Shah out of office.

Marji's hands are on her head, she's complaining to her father and Mehri is on the bed sobbing with her arm covering her face and Marji is beside her hugging her and trying to comfort her because that's the most she can do for her.

authors choice: the Asuthor uses Body Language, Graphic Weight, & Facial Expression to show and express how unfortunate this was for not only Mehri but also Marji. the author uses sad and dissapointed facial expression to show how this was such a big let down and unexpected choice from her father and everyone else who ruined the relationship that mehri had.
