Hoesik is a traditional company dinner culture in South Korea, is meant to build stronger relationship among employees by encouraging them to dine and drink together after work. However, this practice often leads to several issues. Many employees feel pressured to attend, worried that saying no could affect their relationships or position at work. This can cause discomfort, especially for those who prefer to keep their work and personal lives separate or have other commitments. Hoesik also disrupts work-life balance by taking up personal time that could be used for rest, family, or other activities, which can hurt overall well-being and productivity. The heavy drinking culture that often accompanies hoesik poses health risks and can create unsafe situations. It can also make some employees feel left out if they choose not to participate due to health, religious, or personal reasons.

Although hoesik aims to strengthen teamwork and friendship, the downsides, like the pressure to join, health risks, and disruption of personal time, outweigh the benefits. In my opinion, companies should rethink the need for hoesik and look for other team-building activities that are more inclusive and respectful of employees personal boundaries. By choosing healthier alternatives, companies can create a more positive work environment that truly supports team relation without harming employees well-being.
