English 1101 was a breath of fresh air in this 1st semester of college. It offered a subtle adjustment from the high school writing world to college. You could see all the same elements we learned in the last few years, but we were asked to use them at a higher standard. I think I needed a class like this to get my feet wet and really understand what the workload could be like. I enjoyed the kind of writing we did and the overall theme of "humor" for the semester. I saw things from different perspectives and it made me really excited to continue writing as I move through college.

Narratives are always fun to write. The easiest thing to talk about is yourself. This was a really great 1st essay to write and I enjoyed the humor prompt surrounding it. It also allowed me to see how critical the details are in college writing. Before this point the only thing I’d written in the last few months were Psychology reports in APA format, so it was also a nice chance to write about something joyful.

This essay was tough. When I chose which article to respond to, I didn’t quite understand the assignment but I thought I did. It was only after a little bit of writing into my first draft I realized I was arguing the wrong thing. But once I figured put which direction I wanted to go in, I think I got my point across clearly and concisely. It felt like grown up writing. I enjoyed figuring it out.

Humor is subjective because there are no two people that are exactly the same. That means there are no two people that think the same. There are people that are very similar and they may think the same thing is funny but while there are commonalities, humor, for the most part, is individualized. For that same reason, there really isn't anything that is universally funny. There is nothing that every single person on Earth would laugh at. Stand-up comedy and TV tend to be more subjective because those jokes require more context. The more background you need on a joke, the more subjective it is. You can't laugh at something when you don't know what the person is talking about.

My favorite comedy movie is "What Now?", the stand-up comedy film on Netflix by Kevin Hart. I like it a lot because it is partly a movie and partly a stand-up show. Kevin Hart is also one of the funniest people alive. Stand-up comedy, to me, is better than watching a "comedy movie" because it's more real. Also, the reactions of the live crowds are fun to see. I discovered the movie randomly one day on Netflix.

When I write I feel very conversational, especially in narratives like this. For my first draft, I may take 2 days and just write whatever. I also edit as I go because I get kind of OCD about punctuation and capitalization. Revision usually takes me a long time because I tend to get picky and indecisive about what I want on paper.

Discussions like this offer a chance to better myself as a writer by learning from others and trying new things. It also offers a chance to reflect on myself and determine how I get things done and if that has been working or not.

In my opinion, timing is really what makes comedy funny. If you say the wrong thing at the wrong time, the joke could go over everyone's head or, in some cases, come off as rude or disrespectful. Comedians really have to pay special attention to this to make sure their delivery is precise, and they deliver the joke with the right amount of emotion/energy.

These kinds of discussions offer a chance to look at something as simple as laughing and asking what goes into it. It's enlightening to talk about these things with other people and it allows you to see thing from a different perspective.

One general rule Rothbard mentions in her article is to understand what you’re setting is. She tells about a comedian that had to go to Dubai and cut out jokes about sex, swearing and politics. I think this comes back to knowing your audience and making sure the set doesn’t disrespect them. Another guideline presented by Raúl Peréz in his article say that the rules for white people and people of color are not the same.

The reason this discussion stood out to me was because it answered a question I've had for a long time. It was about the rules of comedy and what exactly is off limits. The automatic thought this came back to was race, sexuality, disabilities and other controversial things to make fun of. The articles we read and this discussion allowed me to draw some conclusions.

I took a lot of steps this semester to become a better writer and a better student. English 1101 allowed me to properly understand all the different types of writing I could be doing in college and provided a great review of some important writing skills from high school. Time management is a skill that I honed in this class ad will continue to develop as I go through college and life. Dr. Defago did a great job of giving us instructions and leaving the rest to us and that was something I really appreciated. Whether I missed an assignment or turned it in on time, it served as a lesson. Another valuable skill is attention to detail. The amount of detail that went into writing good papers and making sure they are cited responsibly shouldn't be understated. English 1101 with Dr. Defago did a great job of preparing me for further college classes and life.
