In October 2011 at LeRoy Junior/Senior High School twenty students claimed to break out in twitches and jerks. The first person to be involved was Katie Krautwurst, she woke with her jaw jutting forward and her face was contracting in to spasms. Then a few weeks later her bestfriend Thera Sanchez, woke with the same conditions. Officials first reported that the symptoms were due to a vaccine or an environmental toxin.

The hysteria is said to have spread by nearby environmental contamination, side effects from drugs, vaccines, trauma, stress, or genetic factors. The teenagers at LeRoy School whose mission was to expose the risks of environmental toxins was the reason the hysteria spread. Twenty out of 7,641 people were affected with the tourette syndrome in the town of LeRoy. People with touretts have symptoms such as tics where you have uncontrolled movements.

2. Possible Causes

Doctors and Health department officials stated psychological stress cases patients to suffer physical symptoms and mass psychogenic illness. Others said it was due to a vaccine or an environmental toxin. Russel Caram said " this is possible because it is the time of the year where kids get their shots." Caram later discovered most of the victims did not get the same vaccines, so this caused officials to lean towards environmental toxins. The environment theory also failed shortly after. Doctors scanned the kids for toxins and infections and found nothing present. Finally they went with their first assumption and said it was all due to stress.

The LeRoy Tourette's hysteria finally came to an end when doctors encouraged patience to stay away from media. Once the attention died down, the symptoms became better. The reason it was brought about was that girls from school had a lot of stress and expressed it through tourette like symptoms. All together, the main reason the hysteria came to an end was that psychologists diagnosed the people affected with stress.

Unlike in The Crucible, there were no deaths during this hysteria. In fact, most of the girls returned to their normal lives after a few weeks. Another difference is in The Crucible all of the girls symptoms were fake, but during the LeRoy Tourette's hysteria Doctors and Health Department officials claimed it to be due to stress(real).

The people who had the symptoms of tourette's were the real ones who paid the price. They had to live with tics during their time of hysteria. There were no long lasting consequences for the girls with the tourette's hysteria. The hysteria lasted from October 2011 through January 2012.
