Personally, I feel that this project fits me like a glove. This is because of my current lifestyle where I am living with my grandmother. Since my family has always faced struggles of balancing their lives at home and at work, and the time constraint, it became much more difficult for them to look after my grandmother. Thus, I took on the responsibility of taking care after her. I must say, this experience was definitely eye-opening as I was exposed to a fresh, new perspective towards the elderly. This is because the experience was not all smooth sailing, especially with the large age gap and contradicting interests. We are at opposite ends of a spectrum. Thus, it was much harder to adapt and learn how to truly care for her. I learnt when wanting to indulge elderly in games, we must have observation and attention to tiny details. From my own personal experience, I have seen how easily elderlies get bored when the activities are not of their interests. Adding on, they may not feel comfortable with certain activities as some may prefer to have their own space .Thus, by paying more attention to what they like, I have learnt to be more innovative and to provide a more engaging experience for them.

Connecting with the elderly may not be easy because of the generational gap, however, I believe that I have the necessary skills and experience to be able to connect with the elderly people in the community.
Firstly, I have volunteered for many Values In Action (VIA) activities prior to this one, such as visiting an elderly home earlier this year to spend time with the local elderly and teach them basic computing skills as well as bonding over traditional games. Therefore I am more than familiar with connecting with the elderly.
Secondly, I am capable of communicating well with the elderly as I am fluent in the four main languages and certain dialects as well. This will allow me to more easily socialise with the elderly, many of which speak primarily in their own mother tongue.
Finally, I frequently assist my grandparents in their own day-to-day lives by visiting them often to help clean out their houses and accompanying them to the market. Many elderly are not fortunate enough to be in good health to be able to carry out these chores independently, thus I believe it is imperative to aid them wherever possible to make their lives easier.
Hence, I believe that my various skills and experiences have shaped me to be suitable for this VIA project.

Since young, I have always been a passionate advocate for the preservation of the environment. Saving the earth has been embedded in my system, with my family and I have making it a habit to recycle whenever possible. Frequently recycling has allowed me to gain the requisite knowledge and technical skills required for this project, making it second nature. Furthermore, I am the current chairperson of the Environmental Science Club. Being in this club has equipped me with the necessary skills to be suitable for the job. During club sessions, I have manned booths and educate the student body on different ways to recycling and why we should preserve the environment. Through these interactions, I have learned to be more patient and heighten my ability to communicate effectively with others, which in my opinion, will translate well to this project.

Secondly, I think that the “Helping young children get a good start in life” project allows me to develop a sense of compassion towards others and be less self-centred. By accompanying young children on day trips, it gives me the opportunity to not just look out for myself, but also the well being of others. Through this, I am able to work better in teams and cooperate with others. Since young, I have aspired to be an educator due to the great impact they make on a child’s life. Through the KidsREAD Club, I am able to gain the expertise and skills needed to be a teacher. In conclusion, this will allow me to hone my skills, pursue my interests and develop myself to be an individual with relevant soft skills to be a better citizen of singapore.

Firstly, volunteering in our community to help young children can help inspire the children for their futures. For example, reading books to children allows them to learn basic life skills such as reading and improving their language skills. Sports events can be held for children with disabilities, empowering them and giving them hope for their futures, as well as creating an inclusive community for them. Some children come from under privileged families and might have been able visit some places by bringing them on day trips around Singapore, allowing them to see places of interest such as Singapore Botanic Gardens, which is a UNESCO heritage site. This allows them to be given an opportunity to learn more about Singapore and have a sense of appreciation for the country.

Firstly, my previous experience of having participated in similar Values-In-Action (VIA) activities at the nearby community club has made me especially suitable to be an advocate of environmental preservation, since I’ve learned how different types of non-biodegradable trash can take the lives of animals living in the area. The particularly devastating sight of dead birds with their stomachs full of plastic waste has been an increasingly pervasive sight during my time volunteering, never failing to bring heartbroken tears to my eyes, hence sprouting a deep sense of justice towards the lives of fauna, which serves as a driving factor in my belief that all mankind should make the change to recycle plastic instead of tossing it improperly. Furthermore, as the main organiser of the community-club lead cleanups, I have also acquired the skills of being able to identify various types of litter and how to properly dispose of them, along with a diverse set of leadership skills, allowing me to thrive as a steadfast participant that can help to accelerate efficiency in the group, as we work tirelessly during beach clean-ups. Moreover, as I have a younger brother currently in primary school, I have plenty of experience interacting with the younger generation and communicating with them on a personal level, hence making me feel comfortable and perfectly at ease if I were to help educate children in primary schools about environmental protection. Therefore, with my resilient empathy towards environmental preservation and my ability to feel at ease while sustaining social interaction with young children, I believe that I am more than qualified, as well as energetically enthusiastic, to participate in this VIA activity.

It is extremely important to preseve and enhance our environment. It is our responsibility to ensure that our environment is clean, comfortable and calm for our well-being. Volunteering for our community and environment is important as it fosters a sense of belonging to our community and maintains the image of our community , making it a recognisable and iconic. When we volunteer, we will be able to gain a sense of empathy and will work towards becoming a harmonious society. This is important to us as students as we will learn how to work with others, promoting teamwork and harmony- essential skills in our life. By not volunteering, we miss out on these opportunities to develop our skills and values.

One of the three projects that I have chosen to take part in is “Helping young children get a good start in life”. Nothing is more rewarding than supporting young children in my community, and I know of just the ways to do so. Firstly, I can read books to children in my local library at the KidsREAD club to develop a profound passion for reading in them. I have first hand experience participating in KidsREAD club at school, hence I have accumulated sufficient experience and feedback on my performance. Personally, I believe that I am an extremely enthusiastic reader, never failing to excite children with the ranges of pitch and intonation I use when storytelling. I have also experimented with ways to grasp the attention of these young children, such as using hand gestures and puppets when storytelling. Personally, I have younger siblings that I grew up with. I have grow the patience needed when handling young children, and an unwavering dedication towards nurturing young children. Hence, I most definitely want to take part in this activity.

Needless to say, I would definitely benefit from this VIA activity especially through playing online games and teaching them the use of technology. Through this activity, I would be able to develop my sense of sympathy and empathy towards the people around me. By interacting with the elderly, I can understand the hardships of their life, a side of them which remain unbeknownst to many. For example, I am able to have deeper conversations with the elderly where I can hear a tinge of sadness and loneliness in their voices when they talk about their lives and how majority of their friends had passed early on. Many of them also proclaimed that they did not have anyone around them to teach them how to play such games in their pastime or use any of the latest devices. This tugs the heartstrings of my heart and drives me to interact with the elderly more often outside of school. As a result, the people around me will feel valued due to my acts of kindness. I will also feel a sense of accomplishment doing good whenever I can. Therefore, I would undoubtedly benefit from this VIA activity.

Personally, as the eldest of two siblings and many younger cousins, I believe that I am sufficiently equipped with the skills and abilities needed to guide and nurture youths into respectable civilians. Firstly, I possess the ever important virtue of patience needed in dealing with the unpredictable and mischievous nature of rowdy children. Having previously taken part in a KidsRead programme in my primary school years, it has cultivated a passion and patience for helping children develop a love for the many joys of life, even during struggles. Secondly, I possess a youthful spirit that will resonate with the younger generation of today. This positive and carefree attitude of mine would surely make the children feel at ease while they are around me, making them feel safe, comfortable and at ease to be their authentic selves. Accompanying children on a day trip would be a breeze as I love to learn all about their unique perspectives as they experience the world. It takes a village to raise a child, so to give back to my treasured community, I will have a hand in guiding these beloved young members of our community. I believe that with my skills and expertise, I am suitable to develop these young minds into bright and contributing members of society.

The values in action project “Preserve and enhance our environment” truly caught my eye, as I have heard of many rising cases of environmental damages humans have caused recently. I believe in the saying “Everyone plays a part in protecting our Earth”, and think that through contributing to this admirable project of cleaning the local environment I would better the living environment of my own, as well as those around me. Through my involvement, I would also be able to work on my patience when working with those who struggle with the work, such as the younger populous, as well as work on my teamwork with my fellow peers. In addition to the above, I do think that through giving back to the community via cleaning up its waste, I am able to develop closer ties to my community.

Singapore is a country with an increasing elderly population, where 2 in every 5 person is aged above 65. And who’s be able to support them. It is none other than us. Did you know, most of the old folks prefer conversation and interaction over gifts like hampers. And that is exactly what I propose we can all do! We can spend time with the elderly citizens, and support them in leading active and fulfilling lives. Some ways we can achieve this is by - firstly, visiting them in their homes to help with household chores, or just provide company. A large majority of elderlies in Singapore actually have limited mobility and are not able to go about their daily lives very conveniently, let alone doing tedious chores. To solve this issue, I believe that by extending a helping hand to them, they would undoubtedly benefit from it tremendously. Secondly, going to senior recreational centres and play games when them of help them use the latest mobile technology. This can not only foster a better relationship with us and the elderlies, but can also help the elderlies be more knowledgeable about advantages of the latest technology and the little tip and tricks that they can employ in their daily life. For example, e - commerce shopping, ordering food on food delivery apps and many many more. The list goes on! Last but definitely not least, we can do their grocery shopping, or accompany them to their local shops. To me, this will be the most meaningful and fulfilling thing that we can do. Why? Spending quality time. Many elderlies often complain that they feel very lonely, due to the fact that their children or grandchildren are too busy with their hectic lifestyles to make time to visit and accompany them. Simply accompanying them on a trip to the grocery shop can mean the world to them. And the immense sense of accomplishment and pride you would enjoy when you see their warm smile simply cannot be expressed through words alone. Having participated in many values in action (VIA) projects, I believe that I would be able to let the elderly have a whale of a time. Especially because of qualities that I have like patience, empathy and good communication skills. If my classmates and I were to be given the chance to participate in this activity, we would inarguably develop empathy, which is essential for our day-to-day life. With your permission and approval, we would be able to care for our elderlies, the ones who built Singapore from a mudflat to a metropolis, the ones who did not give up through thick and thin, the ones who are now vulnerable and need our help.
