Today we will be collecting all the items that we need to engineer our nest. Please make sure that you and your partners stick together, and only grab materials that are necessary.

1. Partner A will be blindfolded, while Partner B can see.

2. Partner B will vocally guide Partner A through the mine field. If Partner A steps on a mine, you must go back to the start and go again.

3. Purpose: Be the first to get you partner though the mine field

With your group, create the tallest tower that you can build with limited amounts of paper and tape. You will have 7 minutes to complete the task.

Together we are going to take a look at the different steps that make up this process.

• Clearly identify the problem you're trying to solve or the need that you are trying to meet

• What are the challenges? Who is affected? Why is it important to solve this?

Example: Not all side walks have wheelchair accessibility readily available.

• Generate as many ideas and solutions as possible

• Don't limit yourself, think outside the box

• The more creative solutions the better

Example: Make a ramp out of material readily available in the area/community.

• Investigate existing solutions and technologies related to your problem

• Gather information that might be helpful to your solution

Example: Research different types of wheelchair accessibility

• Goals that your solution needs to meet to be successful

• Things that are needed and wanted within the solution

Constraints:

• These are limits or restrictions you have to wool within

• These can include time restraints, materials, and potentially cost

Examples: Make a prototype of a wheelchair accessibility mechanism that is portable and can be used on multiple different types of terrain. You can use hot glue, cardboard, string, wood, aluminum foil. You will have 1.5 hours to complete the task.

Prototype:

• When you build a first, simple version of your solution

• This is often a test model, not a final product

Example: Foldable ramp that can be stored behind the wheelchair, and has strong grips on all four corners to ensure safety for different terrains.

Test and Evaluate:

• Try out your prototype and see if it works to the standards of what was asked of you

• You will check to see if your prototype meets your criteria and constraints

• Identify any problem areas for improvement

Example: If my foldable ramp is too heavy because I made it out of wood, what could I do to change that?

• Share what you did, what you learned, and how your solution will work/ or potentially not work

• This helps other understand your invention and learn from your process

Matching Activity:

Each Team will be provided with two sets of cards:

• Set A (Design Process Steps): Each card will display the name of a distinct step within the Engineering By Design Process

• Set B (Descriptions): Cards will contain phrases or short sentences that accurately describe actions that relate to different steps of the Engineering by Design process.

How to Play:

You and your teammates will match the cards from Set A to the card in Set B. Once you believe you are complete, raise your hand and I will come check for accuracy. If you are incorrect you will start over, if you are correct then you WIN! May the odds be ever in your Favor !

Homework: (Don't Freak Out) You will have a safety contract that needs to be read by both you and your parents. You need to have your parents sign this document and you need to turn it in to me by Tuesday/Wednesday of next week. If you lose your contract before you get home today, you can find extra copies on canvas. This will be your first grade, let's make it a 100!

Birds in hot, humid climates may build nests with better drainage and less insulation, while those in cooler, drier regions might construct thicker, more insulated nests.

Precipitation:

Birds in areas with high rainfall may favor enclosed nests to protect eggs and young from the elements.

Extreme Temperatures:

Birds may adapt by building nests that offer better insulation and protection from extreme heat or cold, or by altering nest orientation to minimize exposure to harsh conditions

Birds often choose nests sites that are difficult for predators to access, such as high trees, in cliff crevices, or within thorny bushes

Nest Structure:

Domed or enclosed nests can offer better protection against predators compared to open-cup nests

Camouflage:

Birds may select materials and nest locations that help camouflage their nests, making them less visible to predators

Birds may orient their nests to minimize the impact of strong winds, particularly in open areas

Urbanization:

Birds in urban environments may adapt by using human-made materials for nesting and selecting nest sites in human-altered structures

Pollution:

Exposure to pollutants can affect nest construction and the microbial communities within nests, potentially impacting the health of your birds

The availability of suitable nesting materials like mud, sticks, grass, or feathers influences the types of nests birds can build

Food Availability:

Birds may build larger nests in areas with abundant food resources, allowing them to raise more young

Habitat Structure:

Birds nesting in the forests may build different nests than those nesting in open grasslands, due to variations in the availability of suitable trees, shrubs, or ground cover

1. Find your group members for this project. Each group will "blindly" select a bird that represents different species around our area. I will spin the wheel.

2. You will write the birds name at the top of the worksheet. You will independently answer the following questions (The more information you can gather the better build your wonderful nest)

Questions:

1. Species name (common and scientific)

2. Habitat and location (Where does this bird live and why)

3. Nest Description (What does the nest look like? What is the shape, size and location?)

4. Materials: (What materials does the bird use to build its nests?)

5. Construction Technique: (How does the bird build the nest? Does it weave, stack, or use mud?)

6. Adaptations (Why does the nest design work so well for this bird's environment?)

1st Warning: Verbal warning about staying on task (no video games, watching videos, etc.)

2nd Warning: Ipad remains with teacher for the entire class period, and parents will receive a note in facts

Using the materials available, make a mock bird nest of your choice. Then you will give a brief description on the type of nest you created.

While the Emperor Penguin doesn't build a nest, most other penguin species do. Their nesting styles vary depending on the environment they live in. In rocky areas, some species like the Adélie and Gentoo penguins build small, circular mounds out of pebbles and rocks, which help to keep the eggs warm and dry. In contrast, species that live in soft ground, such as the Magellanic penguin, dig burrows in the soil or guano to protect their eggs and chicks from predators and harsh weather.

Owls

Owls are often described as "opportunistic nesters" because they rarely build their own nests from scratch. Instead, they prefer to use existing structures. This can include taking over an old nest abandoned by a large bird like a hawk, crow, or heron. They also commonly use natural cavities in trees, cliffs, or even old buildings. The Burrowing Owl is a notable exception, as it lives and nests in underground burrows, often those dug by prairie dogs or other mammals.

Parrots

Parrots are a very diverse group, but most species are cavity nesters. This means they find existing holes in trees or rock formations to lay their eggs. They generally don't add much nesting material, but may chew up some wood fibers to create a soft bedding for their eggs. The Quaker Parrot is a unique exception, as it is one of the only parrot species known to build a large, multi-chambered communal nest out of sticks. These nests can be used by multiple pairs of parrots, resembling a small apartment complex.

Partner B: You can not use abbreviations, You can not use a word that is in the name of the person place or thing.

Examples: If the picture is a Rocket ship, you cannot say "NASA" because that is an abbreviation.

If the picture is of the candy "Hot Tamales" you could not say the word Hot.

Egg Drop Project

Shock Absorption and Landing

The main goal of the egg drop challenge is to protect a fragile object (the egg) from a sudden impact. This is exactly what engineers have to do when designing a lander for a planet or moon. A spacecraft landing on a planet can reach incredible speeds, so a system is needed to absorb the force of the landing and keep the sensitive instruments and rovers inside safe.

• Earth Analogy: You design a container to protect the egg. You might use foam, bubble wrap, or a parachute to slow it down.

• Space Analogy: Engineers design spacecraft with shock-absorbing legs, inflatable airbags, or even retro rockets to slow their descent and cushion the final impact.

Gravity, Mass, and Force

The egg drop challenge is a hands-on way to explore key physics concepts that are crucial in space travel.

• Gravity: The egg's acceleration towards the ground is caused by gravity, a force that affects everything in the universe. Understanding this force is essential for plotting a spacecraft's trajectory.

• Mass and Force: The heavier your egg and its container, the more force they will hit the ground with. Engineers have to balance the need for a strong, protective container with the need to keep the spacecraft light enough to be launched into space.

Problem: Get your payload safely to the surface! Design and build a lander that protects a raw egg that’s dropped from up high.

Criteria and Constraints:

1. You can only use materials given to you

2. You have today and Thursday to create your lander (we test on Friday)

3. Your Egg should make it to the surface without any cracks.

Materials

• Raw egg, or other payload that needs protecting

• Container, like a cardboard tube, cup (4 of the ones I have), box, etc.

• External protection materials, like balloons, rubber bands, craft sticks, straws, etc.

• Internal padding, like fabric, packing materials, paper, etc. (You can use 1 of my sponges)

• 4 hot glue sticks (and 1 hot glue gun)

Before each round, students will decide a location to stand on the back patio. They are required to stay there the remainder of the round. One student at a time will be blind folded and get to drop 3 different sized asteroids on those below. A direct hit is considered planet destruction, a partial hit is only part damage. If no water touches you, you are a safe planet.

Hydropower: Electricity produced by the movement of water, such as from flowing rivers or dams.

Renewable resources generate minimal waste and low-carbon emissions, resulting in less pollution.

Sustainability:

They are naturally replenished, ensuring a continuous supply for future generations, unlike finite non-renewable resources.

Energy Independence:

They can reduce reliance on non-renewable fuel sources, contributing to energy security.

Some renewable sources, like solar and wind, are not constantly available, as they depend on weather conditions.

Management:

Even renewable resources like forests and fisheries can be depleted if not managed sustainably.

Technological Development:

While some are renewable technologies are mature, others still require further research and development.

After completed we are going to go place them in the sunlight with a marshmallow inside.
