         <description><![CDATA[<div>- SUMMARY: A slave who goes and spies during the Revolutionary war and eventually gets her freedom. (2008) <br>- TIME IN HISTORY: Revolutionary Era <br>- AUTHOR: Laurie Anderson started out as a Journalist and she started out writing young adult novels and then went on to write historical novels. She researched for a very long time before writing chains, and was shocked by what she read. <br>- THEMES: Power, Freedom, Inspirations <br>-  REVIEWS: Parents say in reviews that they do not think it is appropriate for younger ages because the details are very raw. <br>- CONNECTIONS: The book has real peoples names it it, so it ties to real life. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This book is mostly about AnneMarie and how she saves her jewish friend from Nazi Germany. <br><br>The main themes are bravery, and friendship.<br><br>This is based around the World War 2, and the holocaust.<br><br>You can use this book for multiple different subjects like reading, history, and the holocaust in particular. <br><br>A lot of parents believe that the book has a positive message but may be a little too graphic for young readers and they should be reading it with an adult. <br><br>The author is known for writing over 30 young adult books. All of her books are based around the same main themes which is involving human connections.She has won two Newbery awards for The Giver and Number The Stars.<br> <br>Young readers couldn't quite wrap their heads around the topic of the holocaust, but they understood the ideas of friendship and struggle throughout the story. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>By Lauren Tarshis<br><br>What are the books mostly about?<br>-Disasters that have occurred throughout Earth's history with a present day character placed back in time in the heart of each disaster.<br>-More specifically, our two books were about the Eruption of Mt. St Helens in 1980 and the Great Chicago Fire of 1871<br><br>What are the main themes?<br>-the hardships of dealing with past natural disasters<br>-resilience <br>-courage<br><br>What historical era does it explore? <br>-Many different ones, as long as a big disaster has happened in it then she probs wrote about it... there's a lot of books in the series<br><br>Writer's approach: <br>-descriptive narrative about a disaster and then places a character in the middle of the disaster.<br>-Has questions and answers in the back of the book about the event <br>-Lists other books that students can read to find out more about the events<br><br>About the author:<br>-Lives in Connecticut with her husband and 4 kids<br>-has written around 23 different books<br>-Won the golden kite award for fiction<br>-New York Times best selling series for I Survived<br>-She's won A LOT of awards<br>-Has really cool teaching resources on her website such as quizzes and activities<br><br>Readers' responses:<br>- They have a better knowledge of the event and they feel as if they were actually apart of it. <br>-All books have received just above 4 stars<br><br>How it may be used in a classroom setting:<br>- During a science unit about different natural disasters<br>-History about the Earth's past</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Whats the book about- Slave boy and his journey to discovering freedom<br><br>Themes- liberation, freedom, destiny, friendship, slavery, trauma<br><br>Time in history- Civil rights era in WWI<br><br>Writing style- typically write about mystery, crime, and race<br><br>About the author- mom was white dad was black and they tried getting married in California during the 50's but it wasn't legal<br><br>Reviews- 3.7/5, not hated but not a super popular book, parents/students had a hard time understanding the science-fi part of the book.<br><br>Classroom setting- can be used in a slavery unit, wrote from a slave's perspective</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1936 Flint Michigan. Rated 4.5/5. Liked by all ages. Published  in 1999. Written by Cristopher Paul Curtis. Took place during the Great Depression. Real setting, real characters, real time. It’s a series all about the Great Depression another book in the series is told through the perspective of a young girl. Could become popular in a classroom because it’s told through the perspective of a young boy and young girl. Also could be used to explain current events such as the water issue in Flint.Critically Acclaimed. Author lived through the Great Depression. 10 y/o boy is the narrator, he lives in a foster family. Real authenticity, author was raised in Flint. Book was made into a Hallmark Movie. Themes from the book: becoming part of a family, poverty, the search for a comfortable loving home. Book for older elementary students. Could be used as a narritive in the Great Depression unit. Also talks about hardships of African Americans in the early 1900’s. </div>]]></description>
