The branch of immunity that is affected in DGS is the adaptive immune system which is responsible for fighting specific infections by producing antibodies which are proteins that bind to and neutralize foreign invaders. Since the adaptive immune system is affected, patients suffer from increased susceptibility to infections and heightened prevalence of autoimmune disorders, such as autoimmune thrombocytopenia. T-lymphocytes also help B-lymphocytes to develop into antibody producing plasma cells. Patients with DGS may have poor T-cell production as the thymus is absent or poorly developed.

  • Hypocalcemia (Underdeveloped parathyroid glands -> low levels of calcium -> seizures, muscle spasms, poor muscle tone)
