I have lived in Missouri for as long as I remember.Every single day I wake up early in the morning to farm and work in the field until late at night when I can finally get some rest. This cycle goes on and on. I always wonder to myself, isn't there more to life than just working all day?I'm 13 years old and live in a small shack with my brother and my mom.I mean I'm happy with what I have but every single day,my heart craves more.
Then one day, every thing changed when my mom told me that she's thinking about escaping.I was overjoyed. The following week we were ready. One cool night we took off,my mom, brother, and I.The North Star was shining as bright as the sun.My mom told us that the star would lead us to the north, where we can be free and taste what freedom feels like.
Soon we were tripping over the slippery roads, since it rained last night. We had to stop every 5 minutes because my brother couldn't keep up with us.He was out of breath and his short legs couldn't carry any longer. So,my mom decided to stay in the forest for the night. We lay down and covered ourselves with leaves and moss.
I knew that any moment, a slavecatcher could capture us and I didn't want to lose any of my family members. Not again. My mom and brother slept but I couldn't sleep.I stayed up most of the night. In the morning, we continued with our journey. After walking for about 25 minutes, we saw a small house with a patterned quilt hung on a cloth line.My mom told me it was a sign that the house was safe and that the house was part of the Underground Railroad.
We went closer to the house and we sat on the porch. After a while,we knocked on the door.An young woman slowly opened the door.As soon as she saw us, she immediately let us in the house. The woman warmly greeted us and provided us with food.We were glad to finally sleep in a actual bed and eat real food.My brother's expression implied that he was shocked.Even mama couldn't hide her surprise. We had to sleep in the attic, but the attic also had a bed.The woman told us it was safer in the attic.
In the morning, the woman told us that there was a man waiting for us in the front of her house. She said he could be trusted. She also gave us some extra food if we needed it later on.
We went outside and saw a huge wagon.Turns out, there was a secret compartment inside the wagon and we hid there. The driver drove us slowly, since the road was very bumpy. We countered 2

I was a confident. I packed a little but not too much food as the master would be suspicious.
The jouney would be hard but I would give my soul in for freedom. I was tired of being a slave doing back breaking labor. It was like plague for the slaves. It was like a sickness being a slave that killed people from labor. But instead of my fellow slaves accepting they will never achieve freedom I say there is chances. I had enough of being a slave although I was a mere child.
I away not looking or turning back fearing the master have found out I was gone already. I was a special slave learning the my letters without going to school and I could do work of a 16 year old slave that is a women.
I ran away because I was tired of waking up in the morning at dawn just to be whipped for being one minutes late to work. I rather be free and enjoy the beautiful sunset then to do hard labor until sunset.
The air got chilly as I ran in the forest with the North Star Polaris guiding me through the depths of the forest.
Although my feet were starting to get blisters and cuts because I am bare feet I still ran in the forest of Virginia.
I stopped at house that was not fancy I decided to try my luck and knocked on the door two times shivering between one another. Fearing the person who would answer would turn me into the authorities.
A woman came out and quickly let me in without a word.
She spoke as she cooked a mysterious but a fragrant meal.
She said "Hello fellow escaped slave I am Emma and you will be safe here for a few days so your cuts heal."
I gasped as she noticed my blisters and cuts as the moment I walked in the shabby and old house.
I ate the delicious and fragrant stew. It warmed my body as I been living off the dried meat and bread for a week.
Emma led me into a secret compartment of the house or just the attic I wasn't so sure because my old masters would let me into the house to do housework. Instead the outside to do back breaking labor.
I heard voices that didn't sound so nice.
They were banging and yelling "traitor" with anger and betrayal. I didn't get why the men were doing what they are doing.
I heard and saw Emma open the doors with a radiant smile that made the men fall because the men were afraid.
    The men muttered the words
Emma Witherteen.
I quickly realize this woman was no regular folk but the daughter of the infamous William Witherteen.
William was a man of no good but never caught because the witnesses were mainly woman. So the authorities would automatically think his crimes were not true. As the witnesses were sentenced to 10 years in jail or hanged. He was a no good man who stole and make profit making him into a millionaire.
There were rumors that he had a wife and daughter. He said that it was true and reveal their identities.
But the most scariest phrase he said was
"I'd will not hesitate to kill you folks if y'all lay a hand on my daughter or wife"
   The men retreated in fear.
She closed the door and
headed to me opening the compartment and whispering something in my ear.
"It's not safe anymore you have to leave tomorrow and leave with a fellow helper ,and watch out for house that have lanterns and this quit pattern".
She quickly showed me a unique with with designs on it. I memorized the pattern because I have a photographic memory.
I woke to the smell of breakfast. Emma handed me a bowl of weird white things but it was delicious.
Emma then handed me a worn but sturdy pair of shoes. I would need them for the jouney she said.
I went out to withness a horse and a man.
  He said hop on.
I was confused as what he saying as he pointed to a carriage with a blanket and a whole lot of carrots. I proceeded to walk towards the carriage and layed down.
He put the uncomfortable burlap cloth on me along with the carrots piled on top.
I was uncomfortable and felt numb because of the lack of space I was given in the pile of carrots.
I listened to the man talking to a man with a deep and funny voice.
The depth voiced man said something but it was unclear because of the carrots being in the way.
All I could manage to hear was
"Hey what you got there my sir"
I knew it wasn't going end well or was it my gut feeling I was confused as the cart started moving again.

Why don't we ever even try to go up north. I'm sorry hunny but it's just to har.... but tom cut her off. Don't you ever want to be free? Well said mama ya know what let's go be free. Now that's my mom said tom. It was stormy and it was dark but they managed to break free. Freedom! They both said. It took 3 days halfway through the south. They stoped in a forest and heard feet. Than a bark! It was slave catchers. Just then they saw a house with a lanter. They had no choice so they ran up to the house knocked on it and someone grabbed them and hid them. Then they knew what was going on. They have heard strories about the underground rail road. They knew they where safe. The next day they hoped on a potato cart and they had reached the north. They where in far! They arrived at New York City where they saw somthin that was them! There was a poster that said a WANTED the Travis family reward $500000 dead or alive! They where shocked! So they knew they where no where safe they had to keep going to freedom land aka Canada

As the sun rose up, I got up. This is how early I was supposed to get up, and get to work. Our master was so cruel that he would only give us food after we finished our morning work. But all we ever got were tiny morsels of food. I looked over to my mama who was already sweeping the floor, but her face looked like she was thinking. "Mama, what's wrong?" I asked, worried. "Nothing, I'm okay sweetheart." Mama replied. I had just decided to go with it and get the work done, because my stomach was grumbling.

After the work of the afternoon and morning, I was exhausted. Mama still had the same expression on, but it became a bit more worried. I couldn't tell much, because my eyes were shutting slowly. Mama told me to get some sleep. "No, Mama", I protested, "I need to get some work done too." Before I could even hear what Mama said, I was quietly asleep on the uncomfortable straw bed Mama made for me.

Suddenly, someone shook me awake. I opened my eyes and saw Mama. "Mama, aren't you asleep?" I asked. "Jill, I need to tell you something honey." Mama replied .At this, I sat up. "I'm thinking of running away from here, tomorrow." As soon as I heard these words come out of my Mama, I was extremely happy! She filled me in on details, making sure she was quiet so the master didn't hear. Then, at about 12 in the morning, we finally went to sleep.

The next day, Mama and I took turns packing as little as we could for the trip. The master wasn't even awake yet, so it helped us go faster.
