         <title>How to find distance of an earthquake&#39;s epicentre from a seismometer</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1) Measure the time between the arrivals of the first p-wave and first s-wave. In the seismogram below, this difference was 24 seconds.<br>2) Plot this time in the leftmost line of the diagram. This will also show the distance of the epicentre from the seismometer. The diagram below shows that the distance in this case was 215km.<br>3) Measure the amplitude of the strongest wave on the rightmost line. In the seismogram below, the strongest amplitude was 23 mm.<br>4) Draw a straight line between these 2 points on the graph. The magnitude of the earthquake is indicated by the part of the middle line your line intersects.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>To do this, we use a process called 'triangulation' where 3 seismometers with known radii detect p-waves and s-waves in order to find (at least) an approximate location of the epicentre.</div>]]></description>
