scammers / dating site
(long format, 35min)

This is the other way that social media has changed the romance scam racket. To a con man, your Facebook page provides an invaluable cheat sheet: a years’ long record of your interests, values and personality, including the organizations you care about, the politics you subscribe to, your hobbies and favourite TV shows. So suddenly you’re not just meeting some guy—you’re meeting a fellow right-of-centre Christian and outdoor enthusiast who also loves dogs or basket weaving or your favourite country song.

Boys State is a week-long all-boys politics camp that smacks of old-school, communist-fearing American nationalism. It was founded by the American Legion in 1935 to, as they put it on their website, “counter the socialism-inspired Young Pioneer Camps”–children’s programs in the 1920s and '30s run by Communist-tied groups that taught American kids about, well, Communism.
//
What Boys State is about, really, is not just the fact that America is run by boys–that's plain enough to see. Moss and Baines are interested in the kind of boys, specifically, who rise to power and why. I remember them vividly. I remember the chanting–huddles of boys with their arms on each other’s shoulders, yelling for candidates we’d only met a few days prior. I recall impossibly confident speeches, kids on the stump pitching themselves through spittle-covered lips, their cheeks covered in pock-marks and acne, yelling about the tenets of a constitution that, at age 17, I still barely even understood. For these boys–the winners, the boys in the film–Boys State was a place where they really come into their own. For me, Boys State was where I realized the kind of man I never wanted to be.
//
The whole thing is a game. And if you choose to play it, you play to win.
//
In Boys State, at least one of the four main subjects seems totally compelled by that goal. René Otero, a Chicago-born teenager and seemingly one of the few Black participants at the entire camp, is first introduced delivering an impressive speech about prison reform at an election for his party’s State Chairman position. This young man, in rhetoric alone, seems years ahead of the many manic, over-stimulated teens we meet throughout the film. But while it’s clear Otero has strong left-leaning motives, the kid is spread thin by the partisan politics of the competition, later saying, “[I’m] just going to be palatable and congenial to what the body wants. I’m going to vote for everything...I’m going to keep my job. If it’s the last thing I do.” By the week’s end, Otero is publicly shamed for a political maneuver deemed too partisan by his opponents–not to mention almost being impeached before facing a wave of racist memes on an Instagram account that’s shared and publicized by his rival party.

Otero isn’t the only subject in the film whose initial convictions are pulverized by the two-party system, though.
//

The new pop sound of North Africa
(podcast, 59 min)
North African music receives very little coverage in the United States. There are no high-profile mixes of recent Tunisian underground dance music from hip DJs, and no young Algerian musicians with major distribution deals in the U.S. So we decided to explore what exactly is going on today in this part of the world. We trace the origins of some of the region’s most interesting current music to the banlieues of Paris, like raï ’n’b--a new autotuned and synth-heavy offshoot of raï. We also explore the Gnawa reggae movement, which finds common ground between Sufi trance and the message of Marley. Returning to familiar traditions, we present a live recording of Kabyle mandoleplayer Hamid Ouchène from Montreal’s Nuits d’Afrique festival, backed by a group of Montreal-based musicians with origins throughout the African continent. We next turn to the North African metal scene that developed during Algeria’s civil conflict to meld Berber folk music with black metal. Finally, we check out the new chaabi revival.

Primer Labs showcases three NLP systems it built in the past year and allows anyone to upload any text to play around with the tech.

The first tool: question-answering.

Upload any document and you can then ask questions in natural language to prompt the system to find an answer in the text. The system also suggests questions that you might want to ask.

The next Primer tool: “named entity recognition.”

This is the task of identifying all the proper names in a document and figuring out which pronouns in the text refer to which people or which organizations. This task is relatively easy—if time-consuming—for humans, but it's historically stumped computers. It is a good example of a skill that is now within software’s grasp thanks to the NLP revolution. In benchmark tests Primer has published, its system has outperformed similar software created by Google and Facebook.

The final and perhaps most difficult task Primer Labs’ tools perform: summarization.

Accurately summarizing long documents is difficult for humans too. And gauging how useful a summary is can be highly subjective. But Primer came up with a clever way to automatically judge summary quality based on BERT, a very large language model that Google created and has made freely available. BERT is what is known as a “masked language model,” because its training consists of learning how to correctly guess what a hidden word in a text is. Primer's BLANC judges summaries by assessing how much better BERT performs in this fill-in-the-blank game after having accessed the summary. The better BERT does, the better the summary. Thanks to BLANC, Primer was able to train a summarization tool that can generate pretty fluent summaries.

Summarization is a huge potential market. In 1995, the average daily reading requirement of a U.S. intelligence analyst assigned to follow the events in one country was just 20,000 words (or about the equivalent of two New Yorker longreads). By 2016, the same analyst’s daily reading load was estimated at 200,000 words—more than the most capable speed reader could possibly skim in 24 hours. This phenomenon is affecting analysts in finance and law too, and is a huge issue for people in the sciences trying to keep up with the explosion in published research.

Researchers can make a key based on the sound made when it goes into a lock

Researchers have recently demonstrated a method of creating a 3D printed copy of a key with the design of the key obtained by listening to the sounds made when the key is slipped into a lock. The system doesn’t require a high-end microphone. The sounds can be recorded using a smartphone or smart doorbell if it’s close enough to the lock.

As odd as this sounds, security researchers say they have proven the series of audible, metallic clicks made as a key slides into a lock can be deciphered by signal processing software. The clicks reveal the exact shape of the sequence of ridges on the key shaft. Once the scientists know this, a working copy of it can be 3D printed.

The system is known as SpiKey, and focuses on the metallic clicks as key ridges hit the locks pins. The team says the clicks are critical to the inference analysis, which is the time between them that allows the SpiKey software to compute the inter-Ridge distances and what locksmiths call the “biting depth” of those ridges. The latter is basically how deeply they cut into the key shaft or were they plateau out.

One way to ruin the analysis is by inserting the key into the lock at a non-constant speed. However, the software is able to compensate for small speed variations. The system outputs the three most likely key designs that will fit the lock used in the audio file that reduces the potential options from 330,000 keys to only three.

For more than 100 years we revered inventor-entrepreneur types with a tone that undermined the collaborative spirit of science while ignoring the contributions of women and nonwhite scholars. In doing so, we perpetuated the myth of the eccentric male genius whose discoveries arise though his brilliance alone.
//
In the name of progress (and manifest destiny), we often disparaged knowledge that threatened the expansion of Western civilization.
//
During the 19th century, Scientific American published articles that legitimized racism. The magazine vigorously advocated for the patent system and its route to wealth—but only for white people. In 1861 the editors wrote that even free Black Americans could not be granted patents, because they were “not regarded as citizens” and could not defend against infringement in court.
//
Scientific American also covered eugenics extensively. The intellectual roots of eugenics sought to improve the human species through breeding. Long before it became the obsession of the Nazi regime, the bias along racial and class lines had become apparent—yet we continued covering eugenics neutrally rather than critically. With the proliferation of both-sides-ism, we allowed contributors to hide racist political agendas under the guise of science. Articles written against eugenics were often labeled “the opposition.”
//

As a “freemium” game, Fortnite makes all of its money through in-app purchases of its virtual currency, and Apple gets a cut of that. When Epic attempted to get around this by offering customers the option of purchasing Fortnite currency directly from Epic at a discount, Apple kicked Fortnite out of the store for violating its terms of service. Epic responded with a lawsuit, joining an ever-louder chorus of developers and legislators who have accused the App Store of monopolistic practices, given its total control over the apps offered on its devices.

Throughout the weekend, attendees variously mentioned bad experiences with early education, struggles with childhood illiteracy and, for more than a few, chronic social isolation. Around the room, heads would nod whenever anyone mentioned the ‘lies we were told at school’. The education system, and their experience of it, was an extension of the crooked system they thought was at work in the wider world, rather than the potential cause for what made them so likely to believe conspiracies in the first place.

For a few, some kind of personal trauma or major event - a divorce, a break-up, a bad trip - had happened to them directly before they realised that the earth was flat. ‘I had an experience with DMT [a psychoactive drug] that slapped me so hard in the face,’ announced one attendee during an open mic session, ‘that within four minutes I had seen God. Three weeks later I found out the earth was flat.’ For others, it was their growing belief in a flat earth that had prompted isolation from friends and family to begin with.
//
So many of these people had come to a point in their lives where believing in a flat earth seemed a good option for them. Many more had been rejected and cast out, isolated from loved ones who thought they'd cracked. It was vindicating and comforting for them to find and meet others who believed what they did, even if the meeting itself was in such dour surroundings.
//
If you can hold the idea in your mind that the earth is flat and deflect all incoming logical argument or evidence to the contrary, you are able to believe and do even more. You can do this because you operate from a position where your worldview is driven by your identity, not from what can be scientifically or objectively observed, or what the experts tell you. As a flat earther you may well ‘do your own research’ but this is only ever done to gather the supporting material needed to hold your identity in place. It is confirmation bias, the facts twisted or fabricated where necessary to make sense of what you believe to be true. With a firm hold on your new identity, you are better able to evangelise the new beliefs that have given you solace, spreading misinformation even further.

The human race has survived and thrived, in part, because we are able to trust each other. I do not know how to operate a power plant, grow a crop, or develop medicine. I am very happy for others to do these things for me because I trust they are acting in good faith, know what they're doing, and know better than I do. I leave it to them and we all gain something from the exchange - a salary for them and electricity, food and good health for me.

When a worldview grows in a group of people that requires the belief that this trust has been fundamentally broken by the institutions of modern society, modern society feels the effects.

What followed over the next two and a half decades was one of the most bizarre careers in Victorian letters. The Weekly News proved a reliable publisher, though it often accompanied McGonagall’s hapless texts with scathingly ironic commentary (a courtesy they were not inclined to extend to their more traditional poetic contributors). Encouraged by what he misconstrued to be rightful artistic recognition, the poet took to local theaters to read his own works and recite Shakespearean soliloquies, whereupon he was often met with raucous crowds who either mockingly encouraged him—sometimes carrying him aloft into the streets—or pelted him with garbage. (Contemporary accounts allege that among the objects he was barraged with were potatoes, footwear, rotten eggs, fish, sacks of soot, peas, snowballs, and, on at least one occasion, a brick.) His profile rising amid these riotous performances, McGonagall increasingly became the victim of a number of cruel pranks, which only served to inflate his own sense of vocational destiny.
