that's a very interesting debate!! i feel like nowadays people are encouraging the idea of sharing and relaying the voices of minorities instead of speaking for them / stealing their spot

The LAoSFY by Bern Porter is a collection of writing (poems) that are arranged as an alphabet book;  one of the only pieces of writing published. The publication is also accompanied by a series of black and white collages by Steve Perkins. The writing consists of contradicting descriptive sentences from a rather pessimistic view, which could be a reflection from Porter’s own personal history and career change from science to art.

It’s been published for the first time at 1985, and reprinted in 2008. We believe that his work was also influenced to some extent by the circumstances of the time,as an artist and scientist who lived through the Great War.

The general viewpoint within both debating parties drew to an amicable understanding, partly due to the sensitivity of the statements in regards to sexual discrimination, racism and lack of inclusivity and whether or not Bern Porter took interest in the content he was preaching within The LAofSFY. Whereas the opposing opinion challenged the idea that Bern actually acted as an advocate of change for the unheard voices of the masses within these statements, in a time where integration between minority communities and educated white males were segregated.

Disappointed in himself and his contributions to science, particularly the invention of the atomic bomb- as they were ultimately used for military purposes that resulted in mass casualties- Porter redirected his energy and shifted his career towards art and literature, in the hopes that he would have a more positive impact, and that his work would ultimately not harm others.

On deeper analysis, applying our input to our operation (DIVISION), made look closer at some of the statements made by Porter in order to categorise them.. This made us question whether he was acting as a voice for the oppressed after he turned his attention to artistic pursuits after realising the negative impact of his purely scientific projects or if he is exploring his own opinions meaning appropriating the experiences of others.

We used this to form a rapid prototype of a debate as it caused an interesting discussion in group asa we spoke about our opinions on whether Porter is entitled to preach statements of oppression as a heterosexual Caucasian man who hasn’t directly experienced what he preaches himself? For example in his quote 'THE QUEERING OF SEXES'.

But at the same time, there was so much happening in the US during the 20^th century, that it’s hard to ignore other possible affiliations Porter could have made or referenced to within his work. One of the more prominent events in modern US history that occurred during the 50’s and 60’s was the civil rights movement. Following centuries-long efforts to abolish slavery and racial oppression, the American civil rights movement against racial segregation and discrimination came to prominence in the 1950’s. This recorded multiple historical turning points, events and figures such as Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, the Freedom Riders, Little Rock Nine, and so on. Having such a large movement that was widespread across the country, it would be hard to go unnoticed, even in Belfast, Maine, where Porter resided. The social turmoil that the US faced during this era would have affected everyone in any walk of life, therefore we should also assume that Porter was not only aware but also affected. Without knowing what stance/ side Porter actually took in this particular case study, it could still be inferred that those negative nouns could in some way reference these events. Regardless of whether Porter was on the side of the oppressor or the oppressed, he possibly targeted the hate and tranformed them into the negative nouns, further amplifying his anger and frustration. There is of course a plethora of different monumental historical events and instances that occurred throughout his lifetime that Porter could actual be referencing through these nouns, including other social, historical and even economical contexts, however this is just one interpretation that could be made due to its prominence during the era.

it may have felt unpatriotic to confess one’s ambivalence toward God while the U.S. was locked in a geopolitical showdown with a godless Evil Empire. In 1991, however, the Cold War ended. As the U.S.S.R. dissolved, so did atheism’s association with America’s nemesis. After that, “nones” could be forthright about their religious indifference, without worrying that it made them sound like Soviet apologists.


The Church is just one of many social institutions—including banks, Congress, and the police—that have lost public trust in an age of elite failure. But scandals in the Catholic Church have accelerated its particularly rapid loss of moral stature.


Christianity’s association with unpopular Republican policies drove more young liberals and moderates away from both the party and the Church.


The Civil Rights movement, the "Sexual Revolution," and new "alternative" religions (e.g., yoga, transcendental meditation, Buddhism, Hinduism) all challenged the traditional church and its teachings, its leaders and their actions. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, then, religion itself was not rejected so much as was institutionalized Christianity. The Church, along with government, big business, and the military—those composing "the Establishment"—was denounced by the young adults of the '60s for its materialism, power ploys, self-interest, and smug complacency.

In November 1986, it emerged that the White House had secretly sold arms to Iran in an effort to win the freedom of U.S. hostages in Lebanon, and then diverted money from the sales to Nicaraguan rebels known as the Contras. The Iran-Contra affair, as it became known, resulted in the convictions–later reversed–of Reagan’s national security adviser, John Poindexter (1936-), and Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North (1943-), a member of the National Security Council
