At first glance, 'The Last Acts of Saint Fuck You' appear to be a carefully considered selection of statements - nothing more, nothing less. However upon further inspection, one can begin to understand the inner workings of Bern Porter and his complex mind.

Alphabetically organised, Bern's approach to visual poetry take shape from found snippets which he lifts directly from Stateside visual information. Each of the statements found within his written work are received by the audience as declarations of disbelief and disapproval, direct responses to the waste of a new culture - advertisements, junk mail etc plaguing a post World War II America.

All his life Porter had a love for literature, the visual arts and poetry in particular. As a child he created countless scrapbooks filled with collaged cut-outs of texts and images from newspapers. This process, used in the early scrapbooks, would later be developed into his technique of visual collaged poetry that he refers to as "Founds".

We found this he also visualised his life, opinions and findings in the same form, using words/ poem formed with a combination of nouns and verbs in the piece The Last Acts of Saint Fuck You

"In world events and culture, 1985 can be characterized as heralding in the new. Windows 1.0 is released, the FDA develops a test for screening blood for AIDS, the first successful artificial heart transplant occurs, Gorbachev becomes the de facto leader of the Soviet Union, and the NES game system hits the US. Heck, even Coke was new in 1985. On the music front, this was the year of both “We Are the World” and “Live Aid.” Big singles of the year included “Rock Me Amadeus,” “Take on Me,” and “Like a Virgin.” The Golden Girls hit the small screen, while “Back to the Future,” “The Goonies,” and “Breakfast Club” hit the big screen.
'Porter’s multi-volume series of founds amount to a kind of counter-encyclopedia, a massive archive of obscure fragments that refuse instrumentalization, a repository of fractured knowledge that, in its glorious indecipherability, stands in tacit protest to the ravages of modernity.'

United States v. Maine, 469 U.S. 504 (1985), also known as the Rhode Island and New York Boundary Case, was a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which held that the Long Island and Block Island Sounds in part constitute a juridical bay.

The federal government and states couldn't agree who controlled the Long Island and Block Island sounds. The states wanted control to regulate shipping and commerce on the sounds. The key to the case was if Long Island was, for legal purposes, an extension of the mainland or an island.

In the end the court ruled in favor of the states. The Court came to this decision by determining that the East River, which separates Long Island from the mainland, was too shallow for safe ship passage until humans widened it. Therefore, Long Island is not a natural island. Also, Long Island and the adjacent shore also share a common geological history.

There are multiple references to religious imagery throughout the work, often with a negative connotation, amplifying a disheartened tone, emulating a sense of anger and almost resentment. It paints a very dark setting, which could further convey his own personal anger and frustration at the world at the time.

In 1980's America, when Porter published his work, there was a nonreligious lurch which was a result of historical events occurring at the time.

One being the end of the Cold War. Some have said it may have felt unpatriotic to confess one’s ambivalence toward God while America was locked in war with the Soviet Union.

Two being a combination of scandals in the Catholic Church. The Church is one of many social institutions that lost public trust in an age of elite failure and have accelerated its particularly rapid loss of moral stature. The Church, along with government, big business, and the military—was denounced by the young adults of the ‘60s for its materialism, power ploys, self-interest, and smug complacency.

Three, the association of the Republican Party with the Christian right. They condemn the practice of abortion and see it is murder and Contraception is condemned.

Therefore the 1960s did swing wide a door that had never been opened before.

Words related to the law also appear several times in the poem. The law usually represents and symbolises fairness and justice. However, there are many instances in the poem where there is an escape from the law, or where the law is unjust. From my point of view, although this reflects Bern Porter's strong disappointment with the state of society at the time, he still had aspirations for an ideal society that was fair and just. His change of heart in viewing the world came about when he switched from a scientific career to art. What he wanted to express had come to an end in terms of science and thus turned to art.

Politically related words appear several times in Bern porter's poems. And when these words do appear, they usually carry a satirical connotation of corruption. Combining the social context of the time with the context in which Bern Porter wrote, we can appreciate his dissatisfaction with the political environment in which he lived and his attempts to use his voice to make some changes.
In the United States, the political environment in the 1980s was full of turmoil and unrest due to the Cold War. And the suburban and rural population of the Southwest and California began to rise after the Second World War and exploded in the 1970s. This led to the ageing of cities in the 1980s, bringing problems of overcrowding, pollution and crime. People were tired of paying high taxes for social programs they did not consider effective and were worried about the stagnating economy.
The many references to the 'common man' and the 'citizen’ in the poetry also reflect his concern for class issues.
By early 1982, the United States was experiencing its worst recession since the Great Depression.Nine million people were unemployed in November of that year.Businesses closed, families lost their homes and farmers lost their land.
This may explain the negativity tone against politics and society in the poetry.

Negativity within his work. Porter uses multiple nouns that describe people in a negative light, however paired together with contrasting verbs; those not normally associated with the nouns (ie.THE CAMOUFLAGING OF ENEMIES, THE BREEDING OF MONSTERS). There’s an immediate sense of frustration from Porter pairing the negative nouns with such verbs. This could be related back to Porter’s own personal history and his distaste with his own involvement with war. Assuming Porter held a strong moral compass towards himself after his scientific career and its detrimental effects on innocent people, his references to such nouns could be seen as his own distaste/ anger towards the world and what it had become (or as how he saw it). His career shift from science to art that was driven by the effects of war could possibly be reflected in such phrases.

But at the same time, there was so much happening in the US during the 20th century, that it’s hard to ignore other possible affiliations Porter could have made or referenced to within his work. One of the more prominent events in modern US history that occurred during the 50’s and 60’s was the civil rights movement. Following centuries-long efforts to abolish slavery and racial oppression, the American civil rights movement against racial segregation and discrimination came to prominence in the 1950’s. This recorded multiple historical turning points, events and figures such as Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, the Freedom Riders, Little Rock Nine, and so on. Having such a large movement that was widespread across the country, it would be hard to go unnoticed, even in Belfast, Maine, where Porter resided. The social turmoil that the US faced during this era would have affected everyone in any walk of life, therefore we should also assume that Porter was not only aware but also affected. Without knowing what stance/ side Porter actually took in this particular case study, it could still be inferred that those negative nouns could in some way reference these events. Regardless of whether Porter was on the side of the oppressor or the oppressed, he possibly targeted the hate and tranformed them into the negative nouns, further amplifying his anger and frustration. There is of course a plethora of different monumental historical events and instances that occurred throughout his lifetime that Porter could actual be referencing through these nouns, including other social, historical and even economical contexts, however this is just one interpretation that could be made due to its prominence during the era.

Bern Porter’s input serves as a platform in which he expresses several imageries on sexuality, orientation and queerness. This raises the question as to whether Porter is entitled to express those opinions in the first place. Considering the writing consists of contradicting/ opposing phrases that appear disheartened, and as a white Caucasian man having not experienced the hardships that queer people faced during the 20th century, is expressing these opposing views from an individual stance somewhat insensitive; given the fragility of the topic in 20th century USA? Through his statements, is he speaking for the masses and the collective opinions of other individuals, or is he appropriating the experiences of others- is he therefore entitled to have this platform to express his opinions, without having directly experienced the statements he preaches?

According to Christian Smith, a sociology and religion professor at the University of Notre Dame, America’s nonreligious lurch in the 90's has mostly been the result of historical events:

the association of the Republican Party with the Christian right
The Religious Right: the factions of the right wing of US Politics, typically in the Republican Party, which use Christianity as the basis for their political beliefs. ------ strong focus on social issues in as opposed to economic or global issues.
- condemn the practice of abortion and see it is murder. As this is a policy platform, many groups have actively sort to overturn Roe v Wade 1973 and seeking to defund Planned Parenthood and many other service which provide abortions.
- Contraception is condemned by the religious right, and as with apportion they will seek to campaign against programmes which include contraception such as some policies available under Obamacare.
- Homosexuality, many on the religious right see themselves as the ‘self-appointed conscience of American society’. Some of the more extreme groups within the religious right such as the New Christian Right, campaign to have homosexuality criminalised.

The marriage between the religious and political right delivered Reagan, Bush, and countless state and local victories. But it disgusted liberal Democrats, especially those with weak connections to the Church. It also shocked the conscience of moderates, who preferred a wide berth between their faith and their politics. Smith said it’s possible that young liberals and loosely affiliated Christians first registered their aversion to the Christian right in the early 1990s, after a decade of observing its powerful role in conservative politics.

the end of the Cold War 1947 – 1991)
it may have felt unpatriotic to confess one’s ambivalence toward God while the U.S. was locked in a geopolitical showdown with a godless Evil Empire. In 1991, however, the Cold War ended. As the U.S.S.R. dissolved, so did atheism’s association with America’s nemesis. After that, “nones” could be forthright about their religious indifference, without worrying that it made them sound like Soviet apologists.

The Church is just one of many social institutions—including banks, Congress, and the police—that have lost public trust in an age of elite failure. But scandals in the Catholic Church have accelerated its particularly rapid loss of moral stature.

Christianity’s association with unpopular Republican policies drove more young liberals and moderates away from both the party and the Church.

The Civil Rights movement, the "Sexual Revolution," and new "alternative" religions (e.g., yoga, transcendental meditation, Buddhism, Hinduism) all challenged the traditional church and its teachings, its leaders and their actions. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, then, religion itself was not rejected so much as was institutionalized Christianity. The Church, along with government, big business, and the military—those composing "the Establishment"—was denounced by the young adults of the '60s for its materialism, power ploys, self-interest, and smug complacency.

America remains an intensely religious nation and, if anything, the trend since the late 1980s has been toward stronger religious belief. Eight-in-ten Americans (81%) say that prayer is an important part of their daily lives, and just as many believe there will be a Judgment Day when people will be called before God to answer for their sins. Even more people (87%) agree with the statement “I never doubt the existence of God.”

https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2003/11/05/part-8-religion-in-american-life/

The 1960s "revolution" has perhaps been exaggerated over the years.

Life in the US during the 20th century in regard to openly expressing sexuality, its orientations and queerness can debatably be seen as a turning point into a more progressive society. Homosexuality was not accepted in the public sphere. In areas where criminalization was active, police forces would even actively search for homosexual gatherings in order to expose and eradicate them. The 60’s and 70’s saw a radicalisation of the gay rights movement, departing from the more conservative tactics of the homophile organizations of the 50’s. There are a number of precursors to the seminal moment of the Stonewall Riots in 1969. The Stonewall Riots in the US represent more of a culmination of various activism movements/ demonstrations that occurred through the 60’s to mid 70’s ultimately reaching more of a threshold than a flip-switch sort of historical moment.

We don't know for sure what his stance was, and neither can we confirm nor deny what he truly felt, regardless however we are able to see that Porter recognises the social aspects and change that occurred during the era. Moreover incorporating them into his work, we can't help but wonder whether he was embracing the movements or undermining them. This brings us back to our original question, that considering the work consists of contradicting and disheartened views and phrases, is expressing them from an individual stance somewhat insensitive?

The Last Acts of Saint Fuck You contains statements which verbally denounce tales of economic prosperity and truth. Location, America, time, 20th century. During this era, Porter had worked closely as a physicist within many avenues such as Nasa's Saturn 5 rocket, as well as the Manhattan project, which ultimately take form in the atomic bomb that devastated Hiroshima in 1945. This would prove to be a turning point for Porter, which would be vocalised within his poetry as a demoralising relationship with his former physicist work, as well as its exploitation for profiteering and power play through warfare and weaponry. Other Tales of economic saturation are found within a post war II setting in the US. The economy thrived, and Porter did not agree with the star spangled falsehood spreading throughout America like wildfire. Advertisements within newspaper, magazines and television promised an easier and happier life by purchasing products. Porters stance on this new culture of consumption is regarded as a negative one, and leads on to question the moral values of economic growth, and at what cost.
