Racial tensions in the city were already high because recently, 2 prominent black leaders, Samuel L. Jones and Dr. Calvin P. Davis, had urged Black farmers to avoid local White cotton brokers and sell directly to buyers in Galveston. A newspaper made way to the city that talks about the death of a black man in Longview. The article reported that he and an unnamed woman from Kilgore, Texas were in love and would be married if they were in the north. Jones, the author of the article was found and beaten by the woman's brothers. The finding out about the beating had inflamed tempers of both races. One night, a group of about 15 angry white men went to Jones and when fired upon, they fired back. White men set fire to several black homes and a Black dance hall which they believed was used to store ammo.

A massacre which killed hundreds of African Americans and 5 whites. It was a shooting incident that occurred at a meeting which escalated into mob violence. Tensions grew from the sharecroppers wanting increased payments on their crops from white plantation owners who dominated the area during the Jim Crow era. The aftermath of the massacre seemed to be a "hunt". " H. F. Smiddy, one of the white witnesses to the massacre, swore in an eye-witness account in 1921 that “several hundred of them… began to hunt negroes and shotting [sic] them as they came to them.”"
