When I was a child, I didn't like the idea of sharing birthdays. As I grew older, I started to appreciate it more. But that may be because I was lucky enough to have someone like Namoo-oppa, who always made sure I felt happy and loved. Out of all the holidays, our birthday was the one I looked forward to the most. We had a tradition—both of us get to pick our cake. We'll blow our cakes out at the same time, and then we'll share, because he liked what I liked, and I liked what he liked. We never got each other presents because we never cared about it, but when I moved to Paris with him, we made it a tradition to go someplace we've never been to before. Last year, we were supposed to go to this really expensive restaurant we've been wanting to go for a year. This year... well. I'm sitting at his grave, talking to him about where I wanted to go this year. I told him I wanted to go to Paris, but I didn't really want to. Because the only place I wanted to be in was his arms as he told me that he was there with me.

But he isn't. So no more cakes. No more blowing out candles at the same time. Because it's just me right now, and the last thing I want is to spend my birthday without the person I've shared it with my entire life.

Although they were never close in Nari's youth, she knew him as her brother's most beloved friend and thus respected him as family, although distant. Hwayoung and Jiwon Ryu gave birth to their second child, Nari Moon, on the same day as their first-born, Namoo Moon. Namoo was 3 years old at this time.

Nari's doljanchi (korean first birthday celebration). For her doljabi, she initially crawled towards the hammer and gavel, but placed her little hand on the stethoscope instead, suggesting her future in following her father's footsteps.

Nari's second birthday was a chaotic, yet memorable one. It was the first birthday that she realized she shared it with the other, larger person her parents showed love to. She threw a fit, at first, seeing two cakes on the table, but when the older child showed her kindness and offered she blow out his cake, too, she realized that she had a friend in her sibling, who would always put her first, even at the cost of his own happiness.

Nari was accepted into Sorbonne University, her father's alma mater, and moved in to live with her brother, who she had missed deeply. Her brother had been living in Paris for a few years by this time, working as a graphic designer with his own business. He was more than happy to have his little sister by his side in an otherwise vast, and quite lonely, city.

The night of Nari's 21nd and Namoo's 24th birthday witnessed disaster in the midst of heavy rain, when the slippery roads caused a crash that took the life of the person Nari cherished most.

There are some that say there's a sparkle in her eyes that truly make her look like a genuine angel—pure of heart, who only sees the best in everyone around her. There are others, however, the people she keeps closest to her, that recognize the anguish barely veiled in the corners of her eyes.

Nari bid her final goodbye to the man she revered as her role model. In her eulogy, she commemorated him as not only her brother, but as her best friend, mentor, and idol. He was buried in their place of birth. This was the first time Nari felt lonely in her hometown and childhood home.

The day that once brought her light and joy was filled with darkness in the absence of the person she used to share it with. Instead of celebrating her birthday with her family, Nari chose to spend it alone, crying at her brother's grave as she prayed to God to bring him back and to take her instead, because she could not bear living in a world without the person who taught her how to navigate through it. Her parents found her later that afternoon, and they all held each other in silence as they mourned a bright soul that did not deserve to be taken before his time.

Aside from the impeccable reputation of her shop, Hwayoung Lim is well-known for being "everyone's mother," as she carries with her a warm aura that makes anyone in her presence feel at home. Often wearing a smile on her pretty face, she greets anyone she encounters with nothing less than love, believing that the world would be a better place if everyone showed compassion and respect for one another.

Hwayoung is well connected with the people of the town, and while she does not care for petty gossip, she certainly is an amazing listener with incredible memory.

She is especially affectionate not only with her family and friends, but also Nari's friends, welcoming them into her home like they're her own children, even if her daughter isn't around. She finds that having them around makes the house feel full again.

Currently, she has found peace in her firstborn's death. She misses him and grieves him whenever birthdays or Christmas comes around, but she understands that what had happened was out of their control. She finds comfort in her faith, often praying to God to ask that her son is well-taken care of.

Nari takes after her father, who is the quieter out of the two parents. He does not have much to say most of the time, often finding comfort sitting in the sidelines, observing everyone around him. Much like Nari, he shows his affection through acts of service and quality time, which is especially shown whenever he takes candid pictures of everyone gathered with his phone to later put in an album.

Hwayoung, his loving wife, affectionately calls him a "girl-dad," recalling the time he cried during their daughter's dol, and again when Nari left Lavande for the first time to attend university in Paris. Nari also never got in trouble with him in her younger years. Needless to say, he is most definitely wrapped around his daughter's finger.

Like his wife, he has moved on from his son's passing, but still misses him very deeply. Whenever he longs especially for his firstborn, Jiwon likes to go through his albums, just so the memories—and his son—can feel alive again, if only for a moment.

Namoo, meaning tree. Hwayoung wanted her son to grow up as a pillar of strength, not only for his family, but also for himself.

As the only child of the Boo family for three years, Namoo was never short of receiving love, doted on by both his father and mother who was willing to give him the world. In those three years, he had gotten used to be the only child, so much so that he resented Nari when Hwayoung first announced that he was going to have a sister. That hatred did not last, however, because as soon as he laid his eyes on the small baby in his mother's arms, he fell in love. And ever since then, he vowed to be the best brother he could ever be.

And he was. Nari loved him more than anyone in the entire world. She looked up to him like a role model. Since she was a child, she always followed him around, wanted to do the same things he did, and never really left his side. Whenever she had nightmares, she never went to her parents' room like other children—she always knocked on Namoo's door, asking if she could sleep by his side. And Namoo, who never broke his vows, gladly took little Nari into his arms, promising she was safe and that he won't let anything bad happen to her. Nari always took his word for it, of course, believing that her brother truly did have the ability to ward off all the monsters she saw in her dreams.

When Namoo moved to Paris to pursue his dream of working with big companies as a graphic designer, Nari missed him terribly. She never resented him for it, however, promising him that she will join him when she attends university. She even promised that she'll get into the same university as their father, to which the entire family laughed at, but never doubted.

The years when Nari and Namoo lived together was perhaps some of the best in the former's life. Although they both missed their parents very dearly, Nari found that living away from home, even for a little bit, gave her the kind of freedom a small town couldn't give her. Namoo was more than happy to watch his little sister blossom into a smart, confident adult. All the while Nari admired him for his accomplishments, believing him to be the coolest person she had ever known.

In his final years on this earth, Namoo and Nari planned on fully moving back to Lavande after Nari's graduation. Years of being in the city, although initially exciting because it promised a new, different life, became rather uncomfortable for the two siblings. They thought that the city life felt claustrophobic compared to the tranquility a small town offered. The city life was too busy, too fast-paced. Too stressful, compared to the peaceful, ever-blossoming town they both grew up in. So when he passed, Nari at least found comfort that his wish to return home had been fulfilled.

To remember him, Nari had two butterflies tattooed on her nape—her brother's favorite animal.
