Name: Winston Smith

In the beginning of the book Winston says 2+2=4. In the end of the book on page 290, Winston says 2+2=5. This shows that Winston could not keep his own mindset. It also shows that the government had a way of taking control of their peoples minds, and changing people's opinions. At the beginning of the book he knew that 2+2=5, then at the end, the government forced into his mind that 2+2=5. Winston spent the entire book trying to overcome what they were saying, but in the end the it became too much and his mindset changed. Winston was very determined to make sure that the government did not fool him. During most of the book he always had the mindset that 2+2=4. He never let the government overcome that thought, no matter the risk he took.

Definition: a government that has complete and absolute power over the people. A repressive, unfree type of society.

In the book the government is the main focal point. Many times in the beginning of the book the author writes "Big Brother Is Watching You." George Orwell says many times that there are posters all around the city of this slogan. This shows that the author is trying to say that the government is very watchful. Orwell also writes and Winston describes that there are "telescreens" everywhere. These screens can see you and hear what you are saying. The people in the city are unable to turn the telescreens off. This again shows that the author is trying to say that the government is very protective and watchful over the city.

Name: Julia

In the book a character named Julia arrives. She is like Winston and dislikes the government. Both Winston and Julia do there best to make the government unable to change their mindset. At many times in the book Winston and Julia meet up. At one point an inner party member questions Julia on her strength of trying to take down the government.
"You are prepared to give your lives?" Obrien says.
"Yes," Julia says.
This shows that Julia had a lot of strength and was a very determined person. Earlier in the book Julia gave Winston a lot of directions to meet up with her. This shows that she was willing to do anything she had to do to still meet up with him.
"...You'll have to remember this. Go to Paddington Station-----"
Julia was a very unique character because of her will and determination to overcome the government.
