Work with student in small group for intervention. Start with having students taking turns reading one to three sentences and then discuss for comprehension. Ask students easy questions that require one or two-word answers and have them write those answers in a reading journal. Have students identify words they do not know and then discuss. Practice vocabulary saying and writing vocabulary words with students.

Assess in Home Language

Allow student to take an assessment for reading, reading comprehension and writing in their home language to see if the issue is a language need or learning disability.

After working with the student in small groups for two weeks to a quarter to allow student the opportunity to make any growth assess again to see if there has been any progress made.

Work with ELL students in small groups to differentiate. Examples of differentiating instruction for ELL students are: graphic organizers, scaffolding, pictures to match the English words for the students to make connections in their home language, slowing down videos for students to be able to better understand what is being said, allowing students to read texts in their home language and then answer comprehension questions in English and doing daily writing tasks by starting with tracing letters and progressing to sentences.

Refer to Student Support Team

If student has not made any progress after two weeks to a quarter of teacher intervention, I would refer to the Student Support Team for further evaluation and observation and to determine if special education services is an appropriate track for the student.

Language Need or Learning Disability

After working with students for two weeks to a quarter, and they have shown progress using their home language then I would refer the student to an ESOL teacher to make further progress. If they have not made progress using their home language, I would have the Student Support Team evaluate and observe further to determine if special education services would be an appropriate track for those students not progressing after teacher interventions.
