Question 4 by Paige Burkholder

Read Quran 22:40-41. Many people say that Islam is a fundamentally violent religion that calls on the forced conversion and oppresses women with violence and manipulation. After reading the Fuller article and the Quran verse, what might be your response to someone who might say this?

After reading the verses from the Quran, I'd say that people that perceive Islamas violent or forceful are basing their views on sheer ignorance. They are only looking at people who have falsely interpreted the Quran, not the Quarn itself. The Quran permits defense of one's religion and themself, however, it does not permit violence caused by irrationality or extremism.

After reading both the article and the Quran, it can be responded that people of Islam are only acting upon the event of themselves being betrayed or unfairly dealt with. They are given permission to defend themselves and their belief and do not search for forced conversion, but to protect their own. Woman however are given restrictions, such as being told to cover up but that is by god, there is no manipulation nor oppression of violence, if one follows in Islam, they must remain loyal and this is an example of that loyalty.

Our response to someone who might say this is that nearly all religions have religious texts that may support some sort of violent action; for example, Christianity. What we have to take into consideration are that religious texts are products of their eras, eras that were often turbulent and full of violence. What matters is how people choose to interpret them: literally, or with the recognition that some segments are perhaps no longer applicable.

I would say that they are basing their opinion based on what they hear and see in the news, instead of focusing on the facts.
1. The middle east has been invaded, has had resources commandeered, and borders redrawn to fit western ideals,.
2. A recent history of terrorist attacks say that of the 498 terrorist attacks that took place on the EU in 2006, only one was carried out by Islamist's.
3. They (people who oppose Islam) pick and choose verses from the Quran and do not go beyond what they hear in the news and society's opinion. That makes them ignorant, and not Islamist's.
