They are only looking at people who have falsely interpreted the Quran, not the Quarn itself. The Quran permits defense of one's religion and themself, however, it does not permit violence caused by irrationality or extremism.

They are given permission to defend themselves and their belief and do not search for forced conversion, but to protect their own. What we have to take into consideration are that religious texts are products of their eras, eras that were often turbulent and full of violence. 1. The middle east has been invaded, has had resources commandeered, and borders redrawn to fit western ideals,. 
2. A recent history of terrorist attacks say that of the 498 terrorist attacks that took place on the EU in 2006, only one was carried out by Islamist's. 
3. They (people who oppose Islam) pick and choose verses from the Quran and do not go beyond what they hear in the news and society's opinion.
