Dear Students

Now we have reached the end of term 1, we are writing to you with information regarding teaching arrangements for term 2.

As you will be aware from correspondence from the University earlier in the term, departments have been asked to provide a significant increase in face-to-face teaching during term 2.

In line with this requirement, PAIS has arranged for the majority of lectures and seminars to take place face-to-face on campus next term.

Your Tabula timetable should now have updated with room information for your module lectures and seminars. There are a small number of exceptions where classes/lectures will remain online, so please pay close attention to your Tabula timetable. Any PAIS lectures that remain online will be ‘on demand’ sessions and not appear in your timetable. Seminar sign-up for Term 2 PAIS 15 CAT modules will open in January as normal, so they will not appear on your timetable as yet.

We have asked colleagues to provide online lecture alternatives, where appropriate

We understand that in light of the emergence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, some of you may have some concerns about the return of face-to-face teaching.

Please rest assured that the University is listening to and following epidemiological and government advice on the public health situation, and PAIS is committed to following the University’s policies to ensure that all students and staff can participate safely in on campus teaching.

Should University policy change in light of the epidemiological and government advice it receives, the University will email all students to let them know.

For those of you that will be remaining on campus during the vacation, please be advised that academic buildings will have card access disabled for all UG and PGT students from 6pm on 23rd December until the morning of Tuesday 4th January.

We would also like to draw your attention to the University’s ‘Christmas at Warwick’ webpages, which provide information about campus events, opening times, travel, and wellbeing support services that are available during the vacation. The pages can be found at the following link: https://warwick.ac.uk/students/news/christmas/

All that remains is for us to thank you all on behalf of all staff in PAIS for your engagement with your studies this term, and to wish you a pleasant winter vacation. We all look forward to seeing you in 2022.

Best wishes

Justin Greaves (PAIS Director of Student Experience and Progression)

Chris Rogers (PAIS Deputy Head of Department and Director of Education)

Welcome Back to PAIS - Teaching Arrangements in Term 2

Dear Students

We hope you had a good winter vacation. We are writing to you with some important information about the upcoming term.

Face to Face Teaching:

As you know, following the University's plan to increase the amount of face-to-face teaching, PAIS lectures and seminars will largely be held in-person in the Spring term. We have, however, asked PAIS module directors to provide online lecture alternatives.

Should you be required to self-isolate at any point during this term, PAIS will provide additional academic support for missed seminars through advice and feedback hours. Please contact your seminar tutor to let them know that you will be missing the seminar and then book an appointment during seminar tutors’ advice and feedback hours using the booking pages on staff profile pages of the PAIS website, or whichever system your seminar tutor uses. Please also let your personal tutor know so they might offer wellbeing support; Wellbeing Services are also available to offer support and can be contacted via their webpage or by calling 024 7657 5570. There is also information on the support that can be offered while self-isolating available on the central University webpages alongside information on how to access testing and what to do in the event of a positive test.

Face Coverings:

In line with Department for Education guidance, everyone is now required to wear a face covering when moving around indoor spaces and when seated in research, teaching and study spaces (unless they have a valid exemption). We expect that all students attending lectures and seminars comply with this requirement and review the full guidance for face coverings on campus.

Timetabling:

In light of the return to face-to-face teaching, please double check your timetable to confirm final room allocations. If you have a seminar and a lecture that clash, please prioritise attendance at face-to-face seminars and make use of recorded lecture material. If there is no recorded lecture material for your module, please contact the programs team (paisug@warwick.ac.uk) who will assist you in resolving your timetable clash. Any PAIS lectures that remain online will be ‘on demand’ sessions and not appear in your timetable.

Exam Word Limits:

On the basis of feedback from students and staff following the Summer 2020 exam season, and after discussion at Education Committee and consultation with SSLC, PAIS has introduced a limit of 1500 words per hour for exams this year (i.e. a 3-hour exam has a limit of 4500 words, a 2-hour exam 3000 words and a 1.5 hour exam a limit of 2250 words). This has been successfully piloted on the formative exam for PO201 and will ensure fairness and the ability for PAIS to give clearer guidance for students. Please note that this is a limit, and not a target, and good exam answers may well be shorter. Further guidance on exam technique will be provided through module tutors and sessions arranged by the PAIS Director of Student Experience and Progression.

Given the uncertainties generated by the pandemic, teaching arrangements will be kept under review and updated information will be circulated if necessary.

We wish you all the very best for the forthcoming term.

Best wishes

Chris and Justin

Chris Rogers (PAIS Deputy Head of Department and Director of Education)

Justin Greaves (PAIS Director of Student Experience and Progression)

My name is Elena Mylona and I am a 3rd year PhD student in Health Sciences, in Warwick Medical School. I am looking at recruiting an undergraduate student for a summer research project, that we will be applying for URSS (Undergraduate research support scheme) funding. Ideally, we are looking for a 2nd year, but a confident 1st year student, or a 3rd year who will be willing to complete the project before their graduation day (I think this is part of the URSS funding rules), are also welcome to apply.

The student will work with Dr. Oyinlola Oyebode and myself on a study on the social determinants of adolescent active travel using secondary time diary and survey data, over the summer. We are quite flexible on the start date of the 10-week period and on working from home (probably regardless of Covid-19, however, if possible, we would like the student to be able to come to campus at least a couple of times during the time period).

This is a great opportunity for any student who would like more experience with research. Significant contribution to the study will most likely result in the student being listed as a co-author in the future publication, an important asset to have when applying for a PhD or a research position.

Please contact me e.mylona@warwick.ac.uk to apply or discuss if you are suitable for the role. Include a brief description of yourself when it comes to your research interests, confidence on using Stata and if, and thus how, any of your past experiences will help you while working on our project.

Deadline: 25/1/2022 (to contact me); 13/2/2022 (for the URSS application to be submitted).

https://warwick.ac.uk/services/skills/urss/apply/student_form

Dear Students,

Campaigning to end poverty. What's inequality got to do with it?

The Department of Economics is delighted to invite you to our third 360 Guest Lecture with Katy Chakrabortty For several years, Oxfam has made headlines around the world with its pronouncements that global economic inequality is out of control.

This year, Oxfam found that the Covid-19 pandemic had supercharged the trend, leading to the 10 richest men in the world doubling their wealth since the beginning of the pandemic, whilst Covid has pushed an extra 160 million people into poverty. This may feel unfair, but for a charity that wants to end poverty, why does it matter that some people are so rich? There is no fixed pie of wealth, so surely there is room for the super-rich to get richer and still have success stories at the bottom?

This lecture from Oxfam’s Head of Policy and Advocacy will outline why the billionaire boom is not something to celebrate, but is a symptom of an increasingly broken economics that it is making it harder to overcome poverty. It will talk about what needs to be done to reverse this trend, and discuss the role of campaigning, communications, evidence and advocacy in persuading the richest that they can’t have it all. Here are details of the event:

Monday 14 February 6.15-7.15pm
Microsoft Teams - you will receive a link to the MS Team meeting once you register via the webpage below

REGISTER HERE

Katy is Head of Policy and Advocacy at Oxfam GB. She leads the team focused on Oxfam's policy influence in the UK. She has been at Oxfam since 2009, and as well as political relations work she has played a major role in Oxfam's Even it Up campaign against extreme economic inequality.

We look forward to seeing many of you there.

Best wishes,

Maxine Thacker
Events and On-line Communications Manager
Department of Economics
maxine.thacker@warwick.ac.uk

PAIS Dissertation Information Session

I hope you are all well. I am following up my email on PAIS module pre-registration, sent on 30/06/22.

As you know, in PAIS we value and act on your feedback.

In response to feedback, we aim to do even more to support your study choices (such as whether to undertake a PAIS dissertation in your final year).

Therefore, we have put together an (online) PAIS Dissertation Information Session for you all at the link below:

PAIS DISSERTATION INFORMATION SESSION

We hope the information session will answer many of the questions you may be having about the dissertation option.

However, if after reviewing the material anything is unclear or you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

A reminder (as per our earlier comms) that there is no guarantee that a particular optional module will run in any given year, or that it will be run by a particular academic colleague.

Therefore, you may wish to consider a dissertation in order to study a subject area that is not available to you via a taught module (e.g. if the module is not running or full).

Best wishes

Justin

Dr Justin Greaves

Associate Professor | Director of Student Experience and Progression (DSEP)

Important Updates on PAIS Module Registration

I hope you have a good end of term. As PAIS Director of Student Experience and Progression (DSEP) I wish you all the best for your upcoming exam results.

We have some important updates on PAIS module registration for incoming second years and finalists. This applies to students on single honours and joint degrees with a PAIS dimension. Please do read the following very carefully.

Moreover, please do continue to check your University email for further updates over the summer vacation.

______________________________

PAIS Module Pre-Registration

We are pleased to confirm that in response to student feedback PAIS will again run a system of Module Pre-Registration for 22/23.

This will take place during the summer break. This means you will be able to use your exam results to inform your PAIS module choices (something which we know is important to you based on your feedback).

We will continue to keep you updated via email.

_____________________________

Further Reassurance - How it works

Following feedback and consultation, it will again not be a first come first served system. This has a number of potential advantages for students.

As long as students pre-register by the deadline they will have the same chance of receiving their choices. This avoids the issue with a first come first served system whereby students may lose out if they don't have internet access at the exact point module registration opens, or if there is a problem with their internet connection.

It also reduces the risk of any system crashing (e.g. everyone trying to access a webpage at the same time under a first come first served system).

It makes it more likely students will at least gain their second choices if they don't get their first choice.

_____________________________

PAIS Optional Modules 22/23

We will announce the list of PAIS optional modules running in 22/23 in advance of you needing to make your PAIS module choices.

A reminder that we will apply our usual principles to this:

PAIS’ priority is to provide a high-quality teaching and learning experience to support academic progression. We will only run modules in PAIS if we can ensure quality.

If a module becomes oversubscribed we reserve the right to give priority to our single honours students or those on our joint degree programmes.

There is no guarantee that a particular optional module will run in any given year or that it will be run by a particular academic colleague.

_____________________________

Course Structure and Core Modules

If your ‘home’ Department is PAIS you can find course structures and the core/optional core modules at the link below, in our UG handbook. You will need to take 120 credits in a year in total including both core and optional modules.

PAIS DEPARTMENT COURSE STRUCTURES

If your ‘home’ Department is not PAIS, your course structure, credit requirements, and core modules will be made available through your ‘home’ Department (e.g. on the departmental website or in the department handbook).

______________________________

Advice on Study (Module) Choices

We will be providing lots of advice and guidance on making your module choices. Again, further details to follow in due course.

______________________________

PAIS Dissertation

In the next few days I will be circulating an online advice session on the PAIS dissertation option to incoming finalists. This will provide detailed information and hopefully answer many of the questions you may be having.

To reassure you, you are not required or expected to find a PAIS dissertation supervisor or decide on a topic/title until the start of term 1 of your final year. Therefore, please do not approach staff at this stage. Of course, this does not stop you from informally thinking through potential topics and areas of research in the meantime.

_____________________________

I hope this helps. However, if there are any further questions or queries at this stage, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes

Justin

Dr Justin Greaves

Associate Professor | Director of Student Experience and Progression (DSEP)
