You will need chalk and a sunny day. aradeva1 https://padlet.com/aradeva1/shadows/wish/509416629 Step 1: Pair up with your child (or have a sibling pair with them) and trace each other’s shadows in chalk—first in the morning, then at lunch, and then in the afternoon. Use different colors of chalk for different times of day if possible. Be sure students trace around their shoes first and write their names next to their shadows.
Step 2: Near each shadow, have students draw an arrow to where the sun is in the sky at that time of day.
Step 3: At the end of the day, ask students why they think their morning and afternoon shadows pointed in different directions.

  • Light is a form of energy and travels as a particle and a wave.
  • Humans see light in seven different colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet (ROY G BIV).
  • All objects reflect or absorb the seven different colors of light. Objects appear to be different colors based on what colors they reflect.

Some objects don’t block any light – like windows. These are called transparent objects.

When an object blocks part of the light, but lets part of the light through, it is called translucent. Some translucent objects act as filters, and only let certain colors of light through.
