Literary Focus: How does this poem reflect Dickinson's concerns with faith and immortality?

Thoughts of death or immortality seem to fill Dickinson's concerns in this poem. She holds concern in life after her death: "Her Message is committed/To Hands I cannot see." Although she is not acknowledged by the "World", Dickinson is curious about death and its implications.

Reading Focus Question: What contradictory attitude toward the "World" is reflected in these two poems?

Dickinson feels as if the "World" judges her for pouring out her emotions into her poems; she tends to shut herself in, and keep her thoughts to herself, but through her poetry, Dickinson reveals everything. In this poem, she explains how she wants to be open sometimes, but it can be difficult to show her vulnerable side.

6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of this poem is that death happens to everyone and will not reveal the truth of what one has left behind. To elaborate, one cannot escape death. However, even when one dies, they have no sight into what occurs in the world once they are gone.

3. What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

The poet uses images of nature and a bit of the countryside to get her message across. Though these images are not extremely clear, they add to the visual aspect of this poem. The pictures also represent a more profound thought and idea. The mention of "countrymen" and "Nature" connect, because the country can be associated with the scenic views and peace of nature. Since both of these specific words are symbols as well, their implied meanings of Dickinson's poems and the audience do form the idea that the poet struggled with opening up to others and worried about how people would react to her poetry.
