Great Value products at Walmart

Great Value products and their placement are a great example of logos in every day life.

I do most of the grocery shopping for my household, and find myself at Walmart multiple times a week. When shopping, it is always my goal to save the most amount of money possible!

Walmart incorporates logos into their marketing techniques by placing great value products right next to their name brand alternatives, making comparing prices is much easier. This usage of logos has allowed me (and many others) to pick Great Value over other brands several times!

If Walmart had not placed Great Value products right next to the original, the chance of customers picking up a product at all would be lowered!

An example I know off the top of my head is eggs. The Great Value price of eggs is a little under $5. However, the price of brand name eggs are nearly $10!

If the $5 version were not placed right next to the $10 version, I would be less likely to compare the prices of the two and maybe just not buy eggs at all!

For this reason, I believe Walmart's placement of Great Value products is an excellent example of logos.

Animal Shelter Ads

Animal shelter ads are the first thing that come to mind when I think of pathos.

As someone who has lived with cable their whole life, I have seen the ad above an unfathomable amount of times. If I were to guess, I probably see this ad more than 5 times a week.

The ads excel in their usage of pathos. To tug at our heart strings, they combine a sad backtrack with several extremely upsetting images of neglected dogs. Towards the end of the ad, they give you the opportunity to change their sad lives into happy ones. That's right, YOU! (Only for $19 a month!)

I would be lying if I were to say I haven't been affected by this ad. As an emotional person, the combination of sad puppy eyes with the idea of granting them freedom has almost made me donate. Although I haven't, the ads have had such an emotional impact on me that I remember them nearly every time I see a dog.

Some lines such as, "some wait in darkness, hungry, cold, and afraid" hope to spark a sense of empathy from the viewer. Furthermore, other lines such as "will you help them today?" gives the viewer a feeling of emotional responsibility. Finally, "your 19 dollars a month is all it takes" is a perfect finishing line to add to said sense of responsibility.

All the descriptions listed above target the viewers emotions, making this type of ad a perfect example of pathos.

James Charles X Morphe Pallet

The James Charles x Morphe palette is a great example of ethos.

With over 23 million subscribers and his well known makeup skills, there was no doubt that this influencer lived up to the name of his job in the sense that many people trusted him with their time and money.

The palette was launched by Morphe, who made sure to turn its release into a meet and greet as well, resulting in their anticipating customers being comprised almost entirely of James Charles' fans. All ads for the palette had also had James Charles in them. This proves that Morphe was intentionally using James' credibility to up their sales, and it worked. Without the fans' trust in James' talent, skills, and passion, the palette wouldn't have been as popular as it was.

In conclusion, Morphe's collaboration with James Charles as a method of advertising is a perfect example of the correlation between ethos and marketing success.
