This law, captured by Kurt Lewin's equation B = ƒ(P,E), emphasizes that behavior (B) is a product of both the person (P) and their environment (E). It's not enough to understand the individual or the context in isolation; rather, it's the interplay between these elements that shapes behavior. Thus, one must consider both their individual characteristics and their surroundings.

1st Law

The Law of Least Resistance

Procrastination: Putting off tasks, even important ones, shows our preference for the easiest option. The effort of starting (friction) feels bigger than the future payoff (fuel), so we delay.

Default Options: Companies use pre-selected choices, like automatic subscription renewals, knowing most people won't change them. This leverages our tendency to stick with the easiest path, even if it's not the best for us.

2nd Law

The Person-Environment Interaction

Grocery Store Layout: Placing tempting snacks near checkout lines (environment) preys on shoppers who are hungry or tired (person), leading to impulse buys. The environment exploits a person's current state.

Social Conformity: People are more likely to go along with a group (environment) when they feel insecure (person). The classic line-judging experiment showed that even when people knew the answer was wrong, they'd conform if the group pressured them. Our surroundings can override our own judgment.

3rd Law

The Law of Tradeoffs

Time Spent on Social Media: Scrolling social media (benefit: fun, instant reward) costs us time we could spend on hobbies, relationships, or productive activities. We're trading off potential long-term gains for short-term pleasure.

Environmental Policies: A policy like a plastic bag ban (intended to help the environment) might lead to people using thicker reusable bags that actually take more energy to make. Good intentions can have unexpected downsides. Every decision, even a well-meaning one, has tradeoffs that are important to consider.

Newton's laws emphasize that, just as there are fundamental principles governing the physical world, there are also underlying patterns in how we, as humans, behave.
