         <description><![CDATA[<div>Katherine Louise Bouman (1989/1990) is an American engineer and computer scientist working in the field of computer imagery. She led the development of an algorithm for imaging black holes, known as Continuous High-resolution Image Reconstruction using Patch priors (CHIRP), and was a member of the Event Horizon Telescope team that captured the first image of a black hole. After earning her doctorate, Bouman joined Harvard University as a postdoctoral fellow on the Event Horizon Telescope Imaging team.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>Bouman received significant media attention after a photo, showing her reaction to the detection of the black hole shadow in the EHT images, went viral. Some people in the media and on the Internet misleadingly implied that Bouman was a "lone genius" behind the image. However, Bouman herself repeatedly noted that the result came from the work of a large collaboration, showing the importance of teamwork in science. Bouman also became the target of online harassment, to the extent that her colleague Andrew Chael made a statement on Twitter criticizing "awful and sexist attacks on my colleague and friend", including attempts to undermine her contributions by crediting him solely with work accomplished by the team.<br><br></div><div>In 2020, she received a named professorship at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), she plans to work on new systems for computational imaging using computer vision and machine learning.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Jane Goodall is a British primatologist who has dedicated more than 50 years of her life to the behavioral study of chimpanzees in Tanzania. It all started in July 1960 when she left on her first expedition. Jane was a pioneer in the field. In addition to being extremely cautious and detailed in her reports, she is synonymous with the conservation of animal life. In April of that year she turned 80 years old.&nbsp;<br><br>When she started, she was just a British citizen who did not have any kind of work published in the medium, much less had a university degree. But her study was her calling card to the scientific world and with that she became an internationally renowned woman.&nbsp;<br>During her career Jane suffered rejections in the academic world because she humanized her research object, in this case chimpanzees. She named them and attributed feelings to her subjects, this was not accepted by ethology, a field that studies the process of evolution of the animal. &nbsp;<br><br>Jane's study did not only serve to understand the evolutionary and behavioral process of chimpanzees, it was a milestone in the beginning of a long struggle for the preservation and protection of these animals that in many countries are threatened with their existence. Goodall is considered a milestone in a new era of science, humanized science. This was one of Jane's main purposes when publishing her study. She ignored criticism from the scientific society and humanized field discoveries with direct and intimate contact with chimpanzees.&nbsp;<br><br>Over these 50 years of study Jane has followed the development of 3 generations of chimpanzees in the Gombe Reserve in Tanzania. But after studying them so much, she decided to take to the world the importance of preserving them.&nbsp;<br><br>"If I sat down and allowed chimpanzees here and around the world to become extinct it would be a black mark in human history, so it is extremely important to find a balance between human and animal activity," said Jane.&nbsp;<br><br>After breaking paradigms in the past Jane dedicates herself today to her institute, the “Jane Goodall Institute” works in African countries recruiting people to help in the preservation of these animals. Jane Godall can be considered one of the first visionary women in history. It not only aims to raise awareness of a society that acts in a wrong way to natural goods, Jane Goodall is leaving a legacy of environmental and social awareness that will be extremely important and useful in the future.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Elizabeth Blackwell was born in Bristol, United Kingdom, on February 3, 1821, but she immigrated with her family to the United States very early.</div><div>The loss of her friend encouraged her to study medicine, and after 13 attempts she was able to join the 1847 class at Geneva Medical College.</div><div>Because she was the first woman to graduate, she was discredited, distrustful and prejudiced, making her dream of becoming a surgeon even more difficult.</div><div>Then she moved to Europe, where she followed her medical training in hospitals in London and Paris, studied and specialized in obstetrics at La Maternité. As a young man, Blackwell contracted purulent ophthalmia, causing the doctor to lose sight of one eye and have to give up her career in surgery.</div><div>After discovering the disease, she returned to New York, where she opened the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children in 1857, together with her sister Emily, who also graduated in medicine. The clinic's main objective was to treat poor women and provide positions exclusively to female doctors.</div><div>In 1868, she and her sister founded the educational institution called Women's Medical College of New York, where she taught gynecology and obstetrics and transformed the graduation period from two to four years, graduating about 364 doctors for the 31 years that the institution existed.</div><div>Elizabeth had to move away from the practice of medicine, due to the worsening of her illness, but the doctor continued to work in causes related to health, medicine and feminism, where she spent her last two decades of life.</div><div>His work earned him the publication of books and pamphlets related to health. It is one of the most famous “Pioneer Work in Opening the Medical Profession to Women”, published in the year 1895, where she related her history in medicine and her main achievements and motivations in the area.</div><div>After a lifetime of contributions that opened doors for a new generation of women in medicine, Elizabeth died at home, on May 31, 1910, in Hastings, England.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Mayana Zatz, a molecular biologist and Brazilian geneticist, was born on July 16, 1947 in Tel Aviv, Israel. However, as a child he moved with his family to Brazil, where he still lives today. Daughter of Romanians, father engineer and mother philosopher, the scientist followed different paths from that of her parents. Since he was a child, he was interested in biology, stating that he thought this thing about being a scientist, the books, plants and genetics that was love at first sight, was the best thing.</div><div><br></div><div>In his late teens, he entered the University of São Paulo (USP), where he studied Biology. Right at the beginning of graduation, she started as a Scientific Initiation student in the Human Genetics laboratory of the Biology Department of IBUSP (USP's Biosciences Institute), under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Oswaldo Frota-Pessoa, whom she has great admiration, being one of the responsible for the choice of Mayana in the field of Human and Medical Genetics.</div><div><br></div><div>Still at USP, Mayana completed her master's degree in 1970 and her doctorate in 1974, under the guidance of the same professor, Oswaldo Frota-Pessoa, working with neuromuscular diseases, such as progressive muscular dystrophies. His post-doctorate in the same line of action was at the University of California (UCLA), between 1975 and 1977.</div>]]></description>

He discovered and isolated the chemical elements, polonium and radio, together with Pierre Curie. She was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics and the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne.
Manya Sklodowska, known as Marie Curie, was born in Warsaw, Poland, on November 7, 1867. The daughter of a professor of physics and mathematics in the Warsaw gym, and a pianist, at the age of ten, was orphaned by a mother.
Marie Curie passed away near Sallanches, France, on July 4, 1934. Her vital organs were compromised due to constant exposure to radioactivity without any protection.</pre>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>ADA LOVELACE<br><br></div><pre>Lovelace was born on December 10, 1815 and is the only legitimate daughter of the poet Lord Byron and his wife Anne Isabella "Anabella" Byron, [5] Lady Wentworth. All of Lord Byron's other children were born out of wedlock. [6] Byron was a writer for one of Don Juan's versions. [7] He separated from his wife a month after Ada's birth and left England forever, four months later. He ended up dying ill during the Greek War of Independence, when Ada was eight years old. Ada's mother promoted Ada's interest in mathematics and logic in an effort to prevent her from developing what she saw as Lord Byron's insanity. But Ada remained interested in her father and, at her request, was buried beside him when she died. 
In her youth, her mathematical talents led her to a working and friendly relationship with fellow British mathematician Charles Babbage and, in particular, Babbage's work on the Analytical Engine. Between 1842 and 1843, she translated an article by the Italian military engineer Luigi Federico Menabrea about the machine and complemented it with a set of her own, which she called Annotations. These notes contain an algorithm designed to be processed by machines, which many consider to be the first computer program. She also developed a vision of computers' ability to go beyond mere number calculation or processing, while others, including Babbage himself, focused only on those capabilities. [9] Her "poetic science" mentality [10] led her to ask questions about the Analytical Machine (as shown in her notes) and to examine how individuals and society relate to technology as a collaborative tool.
He married William Lord King at the age of 20. King was named Count of Lovelace in 1838, and Ada became Lady Lovelace. Ada died of uterine cancer at the age of 36.</pre>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<pre>Amalie Emmy Noether was a well-known mathematician, known for her contributions of fundamental importance to the fields of theoretical physics and algebra. Considered by David Hilbert, Albert Einstein, Hermann Weyl and others as the most important woman in the history of mathematics, she revolutionized theories about rings, bodies and algebra. In physics, Noether's theorem explains the fundamental connection between symmetry in physics and conservation laws.

Noether was born into a Jewish family in the town of Erlangen, in Franconia; his father was the mathematician Max Noether. She planned to use French and English after passing the required exams, but instead studied mathematics at the University of Erlangen, where her father taught. After completing her doctorate in 1907, under the supervision of Paul Gordan, she studied at the Erlangen Institute of Mathematics without pay for seven years. At the time, women were largely excluded from academic positions. In 1915, she was invited by David Hilbert and Felix Klein to join the mathematics department at the University of Göttingen, a world-renowned mathematical research center. The philosophy school objected, however, and she spent four years teaching under the name of Hilbert. His qualification was approved in 1919, allowing him to obtain the post of Privatdozent.

Noether remained an important member of the Göttingen mathematics department until 1933 - his students were sometimes called "Noether boys". In 1924, Dutch mathematician B. L. van der Waerden joined his circle and soon became the main exhibitor of Noether's ideas - his work was the basis for the second volume of his influential 1931 book, Moderne Algebra. At the time of his plenary speech at the 1932 International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich, his algebraic acumen was recognized throughout the world. The following year, the Nazi government in Germany dispensed with knowledge of university charges and Noether moved to the United States to take up a position at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. In 1935, she underwent ovarian cyst surgery and, despite signs of recovery, died four days later, at age 53.</pre><div><br></div>]]></description>

At the young age of 26, she followed her passion for animals and Africa to Gombe, Tanzania, where she began her landmark study of chimpanzees in the wild­ immersing herself in their habitat as a neighbor rather than a distant observer. Her discovery in 1960 that chimpanzees make and use tools rocked the scientific world and redefined the relationship between humans and animals. In 1977, she established the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) to advance her work around the world and for generations to come. JGI continues the field research at Gombe and builds on Dr. Goodall’s innovative approach to conservation, which recognizes the central role that people play in the well-being of animals and the environment. In 1991, she founded Roots &amp; Shoots, a global program that empowers young people in nearly 60 countries and since it’s inceptionin 1991 has greatly impacted youth in over 100 countries to act as the informed conservation leaders that the world so urgently needs. Today, Dr. Goodall travels the world, speaking about the threats facing chimpanzees, environmental crises and her reasons for hope. In her books and speeches, she emphasizes the interconnectedness of all living things and the collective power of individual action.
